Bank robbery, jewelry heists, con-artists, skilled thieves. What is there not to like about heist movies? You really can’t beat watching a heist film from the beginning, taking part in the grand plan, selecting a skilled squad, and setting out on the road. And then, expect the unexpected but still wonder about pulling off the perfect heist. Of course, we can’t do any of these in real life but we can watch and fulfill our immoral fictional fantasies of robbing a bank or making friends with thieves. It is for this fulfillment that we watch heist thrillers. Heist films with a dash of humor are perfection on another level.
Here are some fun-heist thrillers you can watch:
Ocean’s 8
Everyone would have most likely seen the Ocean’s franchise. But the least popular one among them is Ocean’s 8. This Ocean’s franchise‘s all-female installment is a one thrilling ride. Ocean’s 8 is directed by Daniel Pemberton and follows Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s sister from the first film, as she plots the biggest heist of her life. Following her release from prison, she reunites with her partner in crime, Lou, and the two form a team of skilled thieves, all of whom are the finest in their respective fields. Their goal is to steal a $150 million diamond necklace from the MET Gala. If you’re still not convinced, look at the cast members. The movie features Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bohem Carter, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina and Rihanna!
The Army of Thieves
One of the films that came from filmmaker Zack Snyder’s collaboration with Netflix is Army of Thieves, a prequel to Army of the Dead. The film is directed by Matthias Schweighöfer and follows Sebastian, a talented safecracker who works as a bank teller. Sebastian’s mundane life is turned upside down when Gwendoline recruits him for a heist, and he joins them in breaking into the safest lockers created by the legendary Hans Wagner. It is not essential to see Army of the Dead to understand the plot of this film, but they are interconnected in some ways. If you’re one of those people who needs the complete experience, you’d better watch the first film.
Red Notice
If the film stars Ryan Reynolds and is set in the comedy genre, you should absolutely see it. The movie was Netflix’s most-watched film when it debuted on the platform in 2021. Red Notice features Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson in the lead roles. The plot revolves around special agent John Hartley (Dwayne) teaming up with the world’s second-best art thief (Ryan Reynolds) to capture the world’s most wanted art thief, who is Gal Gadot’s ‘The Bishop’.
Focus
Nicky, a seasoned con artist, fell in love with Jess, one of his recruits. He taught her everything she knew and helped her become a better con artist. However, things get complicated when Nicky becomes uncomfortable with the relationship and ends things. Years later, she turns up at one of his con-schemes, but she isn’t the same Jesse he last saw. As she becomes more involved, Nicky begins to lose his game. The movie stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie as Nicky and Jess.
Baby Driver
Directed by Edgar Wright, Baby Driver is more of an action thriller than a heist film. Baby is a getaway driver for the heist mastermind, Doc. He has been with him since a very early age, as Baby is somewhat of a prodigy behind the wheel and, with the perfect music, he is the best in the business. But when one day, Baby refuses to do the job for Doc, he starts threatening to hurt his girlfriend, and in his supposedly final task with Doc, everything goes awry. The movie features Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, and Kevin Spacey.
