Grey’s Anatomy Season 20: Is it premiering on ABC in June 2023?

Firstly, we want to clear the air by informing our readers that the much-awaited 20th season of “Grey’s Anatomy” will not be available on ABC until June 2023, making the fandom wait a bit longer. Yes, it’s true! Sadly, due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, which hasn’t reached a resolution yet, writing for the season has not begun, thus causing a delay in production.

Adding more fuel to the fire, ABC released its upcoming fall schedule and Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t part of it! Additionally, there was no indication as to whether the network was keeping it for the midseason, generally known as the January and February 2024 winter slots. As a result, it is currently unknown when the season will air. But, on the bright side, we know that the show was officially renewed on March 24, 2023, for the 2023–24 broadcast season.

So, there is a high chance that the season might still be aiming for a 2023 fall release window, and it is expected to premiere every Thursday. In order to maintain consistency, a similar year gap is possible. In addition to this, the premiere of the episodes can be at the same time slot of 9/8c, just like other original series.

Hence, we suggest that the viewers be patient and keep a closer eye on the social media platforms to get all the details without missing out on any future updates.

Any statement about the show’s official release date and time schedule is still subject to change and still awaits the network’s verification. So, this is just our guess that the next season might follow the same pattern and be released in a similar time frame if the network decides not to change the schedule. In the meantime, the fans can just pray and be hopeful that their favorite show returns as much as possible!

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20: What to expect in the new season?

Not much has been released but the drama will keep the basic theme of the show alive in the next season which focuses on a group of doctors at a hospital in Seattle, including several who began their careers at the facility as interns. Additionally, the plot from the 19th season’s final episode is anticipated to continue in the upcoming season.

The plot of the final, “Happily Ever After?”  followed Nick and Meredith opening their hearts to each other; Bailey gets the recognition she deserves. Later, Link and Jo share an affectionate moment, and Teddy’s life hangs by a thread.

The star cast of the series is expected to include Chandra Wilson as Dr. Miranda Bailey, James Pickens, Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber, Kevin McKidd as Dr. Owen Hunt, Caterina Scorsone as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, Camilla Luddington as Dr. Jo Wilson, and Kim Raver as Dr. Teddy Altman. This is the first season since season 11 not to feature Kelly McCreary as Maggie Pierce after her departure.

Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey is likely to appear in Season 20, but there is no “acting deal” made just yet, according to Deadline. Pompeo continues to serve as an executive producer and contributes the voiceover at the beginning and end of every show. Moreover, the five new main characters which include Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, and Midori Francis, are also reported to join the next season.

“Grey’s Anatomy” was created and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, Debbie Allen, Zoanne Clack, and Meg Marinis are executive producers. It is produced by ABC Signature, which is a part of Disney Television Studios. Lastly, Meg Marinis will serve as the showrunner, taking over from Krista Vernoff, who left the show at the end of the nineteenth season.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20: Will it be the last one?

As of now, the upcoming season has not been designed as the final season of the series. So, there is a chance that the series will be renewed for an additional season, which will be confirmed once the 20th season draws near its conclusion.  Additionally, Kim Raver told Entertainment Tonight, “Let’s keep on going” and that “we would all love season 20.”

“There feels something very momentous about season 20,” she added. Raver also said she doesn’t believe it’s time for Grey’s to close up shop: “I don’t feel that way. I just feel like there’s [something] inherently in Grey’s Anatomy and the amazing way to tell human stories and I feel like that just can keep going. We have all these new, young interns and there are so many stories to be told with them and I love them in contrast with the attendings.”

Further adding, “I think its longevity can keep going because the stories are ever-evolving,” she said.
