Since its debut on Netflix 10 years ago, the dystopian collection series Black Mirror has proven to be a huge success. Each episode, starring some of Hollywood’s best performers, addresses modern topics, generally with an unexpected sci-fi twist. Bandersnatch, a special episode from 2018, even forced viewers to participate in a “choose your own adventure” tale.
In June 2023, creator, writer, and producer Charlie Brooker told the Financial Times that “the show began because I wanted to do something that was unlike other programs, and had a lot of variety in it, because it stops me getting bored.” Unsurprisingly, viewers were captivated with the show’s surprise single storylines.
Black Mirror Season 7 renewal status
Although Netflix has yet to formally renew Black Mirror for season 7, all indications are that the anthology series will return for additional episodes.
Season 6 debuted on Netflix on June 15, 2019, exactly four years after Season 5 debuted on June 5, 2019. It wouldn’t be surprising if season 7 arrived after a lengthy delay as well. It’s also completely feasible that the following season will be released throughout the summer. However, we will have to sit back and see.
Who might be cast for Black Mirror Season 7?
Given the show’s anthology nature, it’s doubtful that any known figures from previous seasons will return. While certain fictional technologies have appeared in various episodes, in addition to the periodic oblique reference that offers authority to the hypothesis that all of these narratives take place in a huge, depressing universe, Season 7 is likely to feature an entirely novel cast. And there will almost certainly be some huge personalities present: Black Mirror began as a small-scale Channel 4 program in the United Kingdom, but as it grew in popularity, it drew the star power of actors such as John Hamm, Miley Cyrus, Salma Hayek, Jesse Plemons, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
What can be Black Mirror Season 7’s plot?
Each new season of Black Mirror raises the stakes, delving further into the interface of technology and humans. As a result, if Black Mirror returns for season 7, the production crew will have their work cut out for them.
Brooker described his approach to season 6 in an interview, saying, “I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect.” “As a result, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes, we’ve got a few new elements… to stretch the parameters of what ‘a Black Mirror episode’ even is,” he concluded. “The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror, but with some wild swings and more variation than ever before.”
Brooker also noted that when it comes to the show’s material, he wants to keep viewers guessing, telling Tudum, “I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people—and myself—or else what’s the point?” It should be a series that defies categorization and is capable of renewing itself.”
Charlie Brooker, the show’s creator, said that he employed ChatGPT to compose an episode of the show during a conversation with Empire magazine in June 2023. “The first thing I did was type ‘generate Black Mirror episode,’ and it comes up with something that looks plausible at first glance, but is shit on second thought,” he continued. “Because all it’s done is look up all the Black Mirror episode synopses and mash them together.” While ChatGPT has the vibe of a Black Mirror episode, it is not going to replace the show’s writers.
Brooker indicated in the same interview that the upcoming seasons of Black Mirror might practically investigate any topic. “There’s no point having an anthology show if you can’t break your own rules,” he explained to Empire. “It was just like a nice, cold glass of water in the face.” Expect the unexpected if Netflix regenerates Black Mirror for season 7.
