5 Scariest horror movies to watch in your life

1. Lights Out (2016)

Lights Out - Official Trailer [HD]

Initially released as a three-minute short film in 2013, Lights Out received exponential fame and went viral on Vimeo and YouTube. Eventually, it grabbed the attention of Warner Bros. and the critically acclaimed horror movie virtuoso, James Wan. The film revolves around a young woman, her brother, and a stereotypical vengeful spirit who is connected with their mother. The spirit can be only felt when the lights are out, hence the title of the movie.

Here’s the official synopsis of the movie (courtesy of IMDb):

“Rebecca must unlock the terror behind her little brother’s experiences that once tested her sanity, bringing her face to face with a supernatural spirit attached to their mother.”

2. Insidious (2010)

Insidious (2010) Official Trailer #1 - James Wan Movie HD

Another horror masterpiece by James Wan that could parallel his The Conjuring. Insidious revolves around young Dalton Lambert who has the psychic ability to astral travel which he unconsciously taps into which results in a coma after seeing an evil entity. And like every other horror movie, soon supernatural and inexplicable things happen around the house so much so that Dalton’s father’s mother is compelled to seek a psychic’s help called Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). Utilizing her psychic abilities, Elise tells them that Dalton is now entrapped in a space called “The Further” where miserable and tortured souls wander aimlessly. In order to save his child from this overwhelming and risky astral world, Dalton’s father Josh (Patrick Wilson) uses his latent psychic abilities to astral travel. This lays a great foundation for the plotline in Insidious 2.

3. Mama (2013)

Mama Official Trailer #1 (2012) - Guillermo Del Toro Horror Movie HD

Created by Andrés Muschietti, Mama revolves around Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain) who adopts the former’s two nieces, Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and Lily (Isabelle Nelisse) as they lived in pathetic conditions in a secluded cabin in the woods alone. Well, not completely “alone” since they were surrounded by their deceased mother’s spirit who protected them from everyone. A perfect amalgamation of tragedy, sorrow and horror, the climax of the movie renders a catharsis among its viewers that makes it one of the most memorable horror movies to watch.

According to Collider:

“When even the radio spots promoting the film send chills down one’s spine upon hearing a child’s voice simply say “mama,” you know it has to be good… and Mama is.”

Directed by Scott Derrickson the movie centers on Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) who performed an exorcism on a young girl, Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) without receiving an authority letter from the church.
