A differently-abled child with autism needs extra care and constant monitoring. Wandering off alone can be dangerous and lethal given the cognitive and motor skills impairment, which is a symptom of the condition.

People reported the heartbreaking case of a 7-year-old autistic boy, who was found dead in a pond near his home hours after he had reportedly vanished. According to a news release from the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, Jesus J. Castellanos-Carreon’s parents noticed that he was gone on Sunday around 2:45 p.m. local time and filed a missing person’s report.

Reportedly, Carreon’s cousin Jasmine Frias wrote in the description of a GoFundMe campaign for his family that they believed that he had wandered off with his dogs around 2 p.m. People reports via the statement from the Sheriff’s office that the boy’s parents informed the authorities about their missing child after “finding signs that Jesus may have gone into a large pond near their residence on Pasadera Road.”

Frias said that after the authorities found Jesus’ shoes in the pond, they conducted a search party there. According to the BCSO via People, the search crew found his body in the pond before 8 p.m., six hours after he was reported missing. Authorities noted that the child’s remains were found in 5 feet of water, which was about 56 degrees Fahrenheit at the time.

According to People, Frias wrote on Jesus’ GoFundMe page description, “If you ever meet him you know how sweet and happy he was,” adding, “Always trying to make us smile with his laughs and smiles, his sweet hugs that would warm anyone up.” Frias said she started the campaign to “properly send this little angel to rest.” She added to the description, “Please keep your thoughts and prayers for the family, thank you.”
