After a 14-year absence from prominent acting roles, the acclaimed actress Angelina Jolie is stepping back into her acting shoes, much to the excitement of her fans. Her upcoming film is expected to win her an Oscar nod, breaking her nomination drought since 2009. Throughout this hiatus, Jolie honed her directing skills, delivering notable films such as ‘Unbroken,’ ‘By the Sea,’ ‘First They Killed My Father,’ and ‘Without Blood.’

Jolie’s last appearance in a film was in 2021, where she portrayed a Marvel superhero in ‘Eternals.’ Her performance as a survival expert in ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead,’ released in May 2021, also garnered attention. However, despite her unique roles, these films did not achieve massive box office success. Notably, even ‘Eternals,’ despite its Marvel association, failed to attain widespread popularity.

Nevertheless, with her upcoming biopic, the 48-year-old actress is poised to showcase her exceptional acting skills and captivate audiences once again.

Who is Jolie playing in the biopic?

Jolie is set to captivate audiences with her performances in two highly anticipated movies in 2024. She will reprise her iconic voice role as Master Tigress in the animated sequel, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4.’

Moreover, she will portray the legendary opera singer Maria Callas in the biopic ‘Maria.’ Directed by Pablo Larraín, known for ‘Lisey’s Story,’ and penned by Steven Knight from ‘Peaky Blinders,’ ‘Maria’ will offer an in-depth glimpse into the final years of Callas’ life during her Paris residence in the 1970s. The two upcoming flicks are expected to highlight Jolie’s acting skills once again.

Can Jolie secure an Oscar nomination with ‘Maria’?

Biopics have a strong track record at the Academy Awards, making Jolie’s role in ‘Maria’ a strong contender for an Oscar nomination since her last nod in 2009. She has previously been nominated as the Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress for her roles in ‘Girl, Interrupted’ and ‘Changeling’ respectively. However, the widely popular actress has secured no wins as of now.

Larrain, on the other hand, has garnered Oscar recognition with his past biopics for lead actors, like Natalie Portman in ‘Jackie’ and Kristen Stewart in ‘Spencer,’ both scripted by Knight. If ‘Maria’ is on par with these films and Jolie delivers a standout performance, she stands a high chance of earning a Best Actress nomination at the 2025 Oscars.
