The revived play has returned in 2023, and it stars Aubrey Plaza as Roberta and Christopher Abbott as Danny at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

The production, which is being directed by Jeff Ward and produced by Sam Rockwell, has reignited the love for Broadway by marking its name on the stage with the star-studded cast who have to adjust their ways to make the play proceed smoothly. Recently, Aubrey Plaza opened up about her experience while working on the play as she also continued to make a small revelation about her living situation as she got a new roommate to make sure her onstage debut was a success.

The White Lotus actress, 39, revealed in an interview with Vulture that she’s currently living with three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone. This unlikely living arrangement has sparked curiosity and speculation among fans to which Plaza clarified that her Agatha: Darkhold Diaries costar, 74, has been helping her adjust to her role in the Off-Broadway revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea by making her soup and doing her laundry.

“She insisted. She’s trying to whip me into shape,” Plaza disclosed to the outlet.

That’s not it! Plaza also continued to share that the Broadway veteran has also been teaching her some crucial, valuable life lessons. The actress recalled a conversation she had with LuPone after getting strep throat shortly before rehearsals started.

“I was like, ‘Why is this happening?'” To this, Plaza recalled saying, “Patti went, ‘It’s happening because you have to toughen up.'” Plaza announced her casting in the playback in July through an Instagram post to her 4.5M followers, with the post captioning: “Couldn’t be in better hands for my first time on stage… and timing couldn’t be stranger… oh well here we go. 10 weeks only. this fall in the west village. link in bio 🌊 🩵🌊” To this post, Vanessa Hudgens commented, “Dopeee. About Danny and the Deep Blue Sea

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is currently playing at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York City from October 30 to January 7. The venue is located in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, closest to the Christopher Street subway station on the 1 line. The play premiered off-Broadway in 1984, and more than 20 of Shanley’s plays have appeared on and off-Broadway.

It runs for approximately 80 minutes with no intermission and is recommended for ages 14 and up. As stated above, Plaza portrays Roberta opposite Christopher Abbott, who stars as Danny. The play was written by Pulitzer Prize, Academy Award, and Tony Award winner John Patrick Shanley. In addition to this, the official synopsis of the play is as follows:

Plaza is Roberta, a divorcée with a teenage son, while Abbott plays Danny, a brooding loner who lives with his mother. Both are haunted by their pasts, and when the two strangers sidle up to a bar in the Bronx, they compare scars over beers. The unlikely pair uncover their deepest, darkest truths, carving out space for empathy — and maybe more.

“Danny and the Deep Blue Sea” is a gripping, early drama from John Patrick Shanley, the celebrated writer of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning “Doubt: A Parable.”
