Should the fans get ready to say their final goodbyes? Here is everything we know so far about Big Sky Season 4.
After the major cliffhanger of the third season finale episode, the fandom was left wondering if there was any chance that the show might make its official return with its much-awaited fourth season! We are aware that the fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the franchise’s renewal for several months, and today is finally the day when we have those answers.
Although we had high hopes for this crime drama thriller franchise, a regrettable development regarding its renewal status has unfortunately foreshadowed it. So, if you’re interested in learning more about it, then you’ve come to the right place! Especially for you, we at Web News Observer have compiled a list of all the most important and up-to-date information about Big Sky Season 4.
Big Sky Season 4: Is it renewed or canceled?
After more than four months of waiting, it looks like the built-up hype for another season has gone to waste as the official reports finally broke on social media confirming that the beloved series has been canceled after three successful seasons.
Yes! You read it right, the series, David E. Kelley’s drama series, which centers on Cassie Dewell and Jenny Hoyt reuniting to unravel a mysterious car wreck as their worlds collide with unsuspecting teens, a face from Jenny’s past, and a vicious outsider, has been short-lived after being suddenly scrapped despite having good ratings from the fans.
The decision isn’t shocking when you consider that ABC has recently gone on a full spree of scrapping some of its newest series, which include Alaska Daily and The Company You Keep, due to poor reception and viewership ratings.
The exact reason for Big Sky Season 4’s cancellation hasn’t been confirmed, but many reports have suggested that the drama series was coupled with the challenging economics of a fourth season, and rumors of on-set tensions had made a renewal for the drama a long shot heading into the upfronts.
On the other hand, the third season of Big Sky averaged a 0.25 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.28 million viewers in the live+same-day ratings, which might seem fairly good when compared to other shows, but for a show of this caliber, that represents a 12% decline in viewership and an 18% decline in the demo compared to season two, making it one of the main reasons for its discontinuation.
However, it seemed as though the series’ demise was certain once the typical period for renewal, which is one to two months following the finale’s premiere, had long gone. Hence, it makes sense to cancel a show with less impact and renew another for a final season to deliver a satisfying conclusion. But on the hopeful side, there is still hope among the fandom that the series might be saved!
Rumors about co-studio A+E Studios seeking a new home for the show are also being considered and hinted at. Of course, this is just speculation, but many shows have been saved by shopping them on other networks. So, there is a slight chance that the same can happen if the series is picked up by another major television network in the coming weeks for it to at least get renewed for a final season to completely wrap up the story which the fans truly deserve to get for investing their time in loving and building a loyal fan base for this show.
We’ll just have to wait and see if that ever happens until then the series is officially canceled.
Big Sky: What is the series about?
The series was created by David E. Kelley and based on The Highway series of books by C. J. Box.
According to the official series synopsis, “Big Sky,” follows private detectives Cassie Dewell and Jenny Hoyt as they reunite to investigate a car wreck outside of Helena, Montana, and they soon discover that the case may not be as straightforward as it seems. As they unravel the mystery of the accident, their worlds will collide with a band of unsuspecting teens, a flirtatious face from Jenny’s past, and a vicious outsider hellbent on finding answers.
In the last season, titled ‘Deadly Trails,’ private detective Cassie Dewell (Bunbury), undersheriff Jenny Hoyt (Winnick), and newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles) maintain order in Helena, Montana with their unparalleled investigative skills. But when a local backcountry trip led by charismatic outfitter Sunny Barnes (Reba McEntire) goes awry, the trio faces their most formidable mystery yet – in which no camper can be trusted and where danger lurks around every jagged rock and gnarled tree.
Moreover, the finale episode, “That Old Feeling,” of the third season which was directed by Jeff T. Thomas and written by Elwood Reid & Dominique A. Holmes & Brian McCauley Johnson ended with Denise and Emily’s lives on the line, Jenny and Beau are determined to bring the Bleeding Heart Killer to justice, no matter what it takes. Meanwhile, Cassie uses her connections to pin down their possible location; and Sunny makes a fiery decision that will change her family forever, but will it all be enough to save the ones they love?
So, there is no doubt that the story had the potential to be explored further, but sadly, the road ended way too early.
The main cast members of the series included Katheryn Winnick as Jenny Hoyt, Kylie Bunbury as Cassie Dewell, Dedee Pfeiffer as Denise Brisbane, Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Tonya Walsh, J. Anthony Pena as Deputy Mo Poppernak, and Jensen Ackles as Sheriff Beau Arlen.
Big Sky is produced by 20th Television in association with A+E Studios. Elwood Reid serves as showrunner, executive producing alongside creator Kelley. C.J. Box, Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Paul McGuigan, Matthew Gross, and Ross Fineman also executive produce. All the episodes of the show are available to stream on ABC, Hulu, and FuboTV.
