Blue Bloods Season 14: Will it arrive in January 2024?

Can we expect the fourteenth installment of the royal classic inter-generational cop family drama by January 2024?

Here is what we know so far.

Since 2010, the Friday night Raegan family dinners have become a staple for ardent fans of the Blue Blood series. We knew they would come back for Season 14 by this fall or early in 2024, according to the CBS fall schedule lineup they provided. But does that hold true anymore? With the writer’s strike entering its third month shutting down major productions, will Blue Bloods Season 14 share the same fate?

Blue Bloods has been a fan classic since 2010, partly because of the treasured family values it portrays and mostly because of TOM SELLECK! Even playing a wiser and elder role, his charm and intellect remain intact. Blue Bloods is sure to provide you with two things, one is Frank (played by Tom Selleck) getting into some kind of political squabble whilst leading the police department, and the second are the Sunday classic Reagan family dinners.

There is a reason why Blue Bloods has managed to keep slot #3 for all programming purposes.

We have a few updates on the release dates regarding Blue Bloods Season 14, so keep reading.

Fan-favorite family-cum-law enforcement drama is renewed to come back for another season (14), which makes Blue Bloods the longest-running current scripted series on CBS only after NCIS. However, its return for January 2024 seems bleak. We have justified this statement below, so continue reading.

There were unwarranted doubts about the return of Season 14 given the extreme budgeting problem, according to The Hollywood Reporter. For the return of the show, the cast had to pay a price. Literally! The actors (including Tom Selleck) agreed on a 25% cut in their income, so you get to watch the show carry on for another season. That’s right. The Reagan family proved to be heroes even in reality.

Relating to this renewal, the President of CBS Entertainment, Amy Reisenbach, stated, “Led by the outstanding Tom Selleck and an incredible cast and creative team, viewers continue to embrace the Reagans, their law enforcement family, and the series’ dramatic storytelling. We can’t wait to pull a chair up to the Reagan family dinner table for another fantastic season.”

However, amidst the revival announcements, the strike broke out and rendered the original course of the series mute. May 2023 witnessed the onslaught of the gravest writer’s protest in the form of the WGA union. Amidst the protest, several competing networks updated their fall broadcast schedules in anticipation of the dissipation of the strikes within the next month. However, in July, the actors union SAG-AFTRA also joined in the protest for their wage rights and better protection against the hindsight of Artificial Intelligence. The last time such a large-scale strike sent Hollywood productions into an indefinite hiatus was 63 years ago! We are in the third month of this double-strike situation, and there are no hopes for reconciliation through negotiations.

In a recent meeting held for the first time in more than three months, the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Friday failed to reach an agreement to resume contract negotiations. Their inability to agree on terms for returning to the bargaining table comes after their much-anticipated meeting to discuss a possible resumption of talks.“As of now, there is no agreement on these items because the AMPTP said they needed to consult with their member studios before moving forward,” the union said in a statement last Friday.

“We wanted to build our schedule for when the world goes back to normal,” George Cheeks, President and CEO, CBS and Chief Content Officer, News and Sports, Paramount+, said at Banff, according to Deadline reports. The ‘back to normal’ signifies the aftermath of the current strike situation.

Given that this is August, and there are no bouts of negotiation taking place, we can seal the investigation shut on a 2024 January release.

Blue Bloods Season 14 Release Date: So When Can We Expect It?

In all possibilities, given the strike situation, we can expect a mid-2024 release instead of a January 2024 release. After CBS released their fall 2023-24 schedule, we were delighted to see Blue Bloods Season 14 in the Friday slot between 10:30 pm to 11:00 pm. This was as of July 17th. Filming for Blue Bloods Season 14 has not begun yet, so CBS had to resort to other methods to follow up on their fall schedule.

Once they reached the cusp of July, they realized that their predictions regarding the simmering down of the strikes had been butchered, and there was no way for a fall release of Season 14. They quickly resorted to changing their revised schedule. Instead of broadcasting new episodes of Blue Bloods Season 14, the CBS network(and later on Paramount+) opted to broadcast reruns of the earlier seasons on the channel Fridays between 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm. So it looks like we will be participating in reminiscing dinners with the Raegan family on Fridays after all.

Blue Bloods Season 14 Episodes: Will There Be Significant Cuts On The Number Of Episodes?

Blue Bloods Season 14: Is it the final season or not?

All clues point to an affirmative positive on this.

Warren Leight pointed out that the longer the writer’s and actors’ strikes go on, the less time studios will have to prepare for their 2024 schedule, quote, “Today many network dramas would have begun shooting their 4th episode of the fall season,” Warren Leight revealed on his social media handle.

To add more confirmation to this update, Warren Leight recently posted about the challenges of meeting deadlines on Twitter stating, “If the strike were somehow to end by Labor Day and shooting were to begin in early fall, the networks might be able to salvage a 13-episode season. The clock keeps ticking.” “Normally the writer’s room opens up 5 weeks before shooting begins,” he explained. “That could be condensed for a shorter season.” This also points to the fact that we will probably get a shorter season with 12-15 episodes instead of the customary 22-episode Season, with each episode having a run-time of 42-44 minutes.

Moreover, a recent meeting between the WGA and the AMPTP at the Sherman Oaks office of the Carol Lombardini-led organization concluded with “mixed results,” according to a well-placed source. No details have yet to emerge as to whether the parties will meet for further talks or if more proposals will be offered. Sources are telling Deadline that the Writers Guild and AMPTP are resuming talks this afternoon. We’re told now that the meeting is in person. We understand that the WGA will be delivering their counter to AMPTP’s counter-proposal from Friday.

Hence yes, we can expect a significant cut-down of the episodes for Blue Bloods Season 14.

Jackie’s return on Blue Bloods Season 13 Episode 20 finale was a surprise fans did not see coming. They loved it and hope for her cameo again in the next season. However, there is no word yet about whether she will make another appearance. Similarly, there are no plans for Lyle Lovett to return.

The creators of the drama include Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, along with its top producing team led by showrunner Kevin Wade.

Now that you have an idea of where Season 13 left off, let us take a look at what possible plotlines Season 14 might explore:

  • Frank does not have a great track record with the Mayor on political issues, and in his post as the Commissioner of Police, We can expect more rendevous in that area. This includes Garrett and Sid, who continue to defy Frank’s political agendas of the day.
  • Sibling squabble is inevitable when it comes to a large family like the Reagans. Erin, who is a woman of her own making, will butt heads with one of her siblings, who constantly question her on how she proceeds with a case.
  • We will also see if Danny finally finds love after juggling between several favored candidates. At least we know who the fans want. It’s a plus for Danny/Baez shippers!
  • While Blue Bloods Season 13 took us through a roller-coaster of intriguing cases and innovative ways through how the unit solved them, for Season 14, fans expect more maturity in the character and an acceptance of moving forward in their plot lines.

So we can expect this season to be even more invigorating, action-packed, eventful family dinners and a portrayal of the unbreakable bond of family through making tough decisions at work. We can expect the cases to be more focused on cybercrimes, cross-border terrorism, human trafficking, etc.

Since filming for Season 14 has not commenced yet, we do not have enough information to share at the moment. However, as the production proceeds and the release date moves closer, first looks at possible plotlines are fated to be leaked. Rest assured; we will be the first to inform you, so keep an eye out for this space.

Blue Bloods Season 15 Revival: Is There A Chance?

We cannot say anything for sure until it is confirmed, but all evidence point to Season 14 of the franchise probably being the end of it. However, this is just speculation following the budgetary challenges the production recently faced. For instance, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that there was a delay in the season renewal announcement due to the lack of funds for production.

We cannot ignore reality forever. Due to budgetary issues, the production will not be able to continue for another season if they cannot afford it, and by the looks of it, it seems to be the case.

Otherwise, the cast has gone through enough seasons for their plotlines to progress ahead of what was needed. In all possibilities, this may be the last season we witness our favorite Irish-American crime-solving family.

But before you start cursing us over this speculation, we just want to put it out there. There are rumors about a spinoff possibly coming on screen after the end of the current sequence. But this is not confirmed. It is just a buzz. So we urge you to hold your horses before you reach the finish line with your assumptions.
