BTS, BLACKPINK & more get nominated in additional categories for MTV VMAs 2022

The MTV VMAs 2022 is just around the corner, and speculations have already begun about the awards and the celebrities who have delivered some amazing gifts in the form of their performances. Recently, the additional list of award nominees was announced on the website on August 19, 2022. Well, the K-pop fans have a whole lot of reasons to rejoice as the celebs have bagged multiple nominations this year.

Talking about BTS, the K-pop group has been nominated for the Group of the Year award. Previously, the Bangtan Boys were also nominated for Best Visual Effects, Best Choreography, Best K-pop, and Best Metaverse Performance. As a result, the Septet has been nominated for a total number of six categories.

BLACKPINK’s nominations

Talking about the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, the members not only have been nominated in the Group of the Year category, but they will also be performing in this year’s VMAs. They have also become the first-ever K-pop girl group to perform at the grand event. They were first nominated for the award back in 2019 when they won two categories, namely Best K-pop and Best Group. BLACKPINK once again won Best Pop and Best K-pop in 2020. Then the group won four awards, including Best Group and Best Choreography, last year.

The performance announcement

On August 16, 2022, YG Entertainment, the agency associated with the group, revealed that BLACKPINK is all set to appear in the 2022 MTV VMAs. For the unversed, the event is going to take place in New Jersey, USA, on August 28, 2022. The awards ceremony that started in 1987 is on par with Billboard Music Awards, Grammys, and American Music Awards.

Other girl groups

Girl groups like Fifth Harmony, Spice Girls, and TLC have rarely performed on the grand stage. According to YG Entertainment, “BLACKPINK is the fourth girl group to perform on stage. Considering the history of MTV VMAs, one can see BLACKPINK’s strong global influence and current status.” For the unversed, the K-pop girl group won the Song of The Summer award for their track How You Like That two years ago at the MTV VMAs. Now, this time, the nomination is for the ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ category. Another BLACKPINK member, Lisa’s solo track LALISA is also nominated under the ‘best K-pop’ category.
