The team is led by Detective Sergeant Hank Voight, who is the enigmatic chief of the Chicago P.D. Intelligence Unit.

The unit investigates the city’s most formidable crimes like drug trafficking and high-profile murders. However, in the midst of a changing criminal justice system, the team and Voight struggles to ensure peace in the community.

The series premiered on NBC on January 8, 2014, and it was renewed for an eighth, ninth and tenth season in February 2020. The ninth season premiered on NBC on September 22, 2021, and it has left the fans wondering if the series will return to Netflix anytime soon or not.

In Season 9, the team tackled more dangerous cases and also faced personal dilemmas that revealed more of what kind of persons they are beneath the badge of an investigator. Atwater encountered Celeste this season and with her, he finally found someone who could relate to him in every way that mattered. Upton and Halstead became closer in this season and it saw them taking their relationship to new levels. Ruzek and Burgess built a new nice little family unit with their adoptive daughter Makayla.

They are not back together but they care for each other and do everything possible to make their child comfortable at home. However, the boundaries between them seemed blurred and there may still be a possibility of the couple coming back in the upcoming episodes.

The finales focused on bringing down Escano. He was still on the run and Anna feared that he would kill her, even after the constant assurance by Voight. The team finds Escano bleeding later and before dying, he told them that Anna had stabbed him. Voight tracked down Anna and she pointed her gun at Voightm while he tried to make her understand the situation. When she heard the sirens, Anna fired on Voight and then, Upton and Halstead had to open fire on Anna. Voight and Anna were rushed to the hospital but Anna died on the operating table, leaving Voight devastated.
