Netflix subscriber or not, by this time, you might have come across the Netflix Original DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Garnering 934 million viewing hours since its premiere, the show is a fictional recounting of murderer and sex offender Jeffrey Dahmer and the story of his victims.
Between 1978 and 1991, the serial killer murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys. If murdering was not enough, he was also subjected to necrophilia, cannibalism, and permanent preservation of body parts after killing some people. Be that as it may, he was successful in washing his hands off the murders, the reason for systemic racism whose effect was reflected on the police force.
With an exponential increase in the number of viewers seeking documentaries and crime thrillers on Netflix, it should not come off as a surprise that the Monster became an instant hit, so much so that it has been renewed for two more seasons.
Is the Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story officially renewed for two more seasons?
The Monster anthology series has been officially renewed for seasons 2 and 3 by Netflix on November 7. The renewal of this crime thriller comes along with the renewal of Ryan Murphy’s The Watcher. Netflix mentions that both the upcoming Ryan Murphy series will “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society.”
According to Bela Bajaria, the head of Global TV at Netflix:
“Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher. The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world. The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes.”
Initially, when Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story premiered on Netflix, a renewal seemed unlikely since the streaming giant touted the series to be limited. However, we all know that at some point, revisiting previous decisions can only pave the way for a better future. And that’s exactly what Ryan Murphy did.
Perhaps, revisiting the previous decision and renewing the show two more seasons can also be bolstered by the increasing viewership numbers that seem to compete with Bridgerton season 2 and Stranger Things season 4. According to Netflix Life, “the series is now the second-most-popular Netflix series of all time.”
What will Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story seasons 2 and 3 focus upon?
Leaning into the success of its first season, Netflix will likely follow the same structural format in Monster seasons 2 and 3. However, the culprit in question will change. The inclusion of John Wayne Gacy in the Monster seemed a bit redundant, but what if there’s something more to this than meets the eye?
Despite being a recipient of exorbitant viewing hours and increasing popularity, Monster is not without its own share of controversy and backlash. The show has brewed debates regarding the representation of Dahmer’s victims and how the show has commercialized them.
For those unversed, here’s the official synopsis of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story:
“Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer gruesomely took the lives of seventeen innocent victims. DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is a series that exposes these unconscionable crimes, centred around the underserved victims and their communities impacted by the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his murderous spree in plain sight for over a decade.”
