1923 Season 2 Expected Release Date: When will it premiere on Paramount?
After being renewed for the highly anticipated second season earlier this year, in February 2023, the fandom has been patiently waiting to get any new updates about the potential release date, especially after almost five months. The Writers Guild’s strike was officially over at 12:01 a.m. PT on September 27, 2023!
“Today, your Negotiating Committee, the WGAW Board, and the WGAE Council all voted unanimously to recommend the agreement,” the guild said of the tentative agreement worked out with the studios and streamers on Sunday. “It will now go to both guilds’ memberships for a ratification vote. Eligible voters will receive ballots and materials for the vote, which will take place from October 2nd to October 9th.” Further confirming, “The term of the agreement is September 25, 2023, through May 1, 2026,” the WGA asserted in its note to members Tuesday.
Due to this agreement, the guild has stated that the writers can now return to work while the ratification process is still being played out.
This is a great update for the fans of various shows, including “1923 Season 2,” as the pre-production stage, which usually involves writing scripts, can now officially recommence without any further delays, and we expect the crew of this beloved drama television series, which serves as a prequel to Yellowstone, will soon begin the work to at least effectively complete the writing of the season on time. So, once the SAG-AFTRA strike also reaches an agreement, it’s only then that the filming might commence by late 2023, with the ideal release window being set sometime around fall 2024!
As we know by now, one of the main reasons for the delay in filming for the second season which was initially scheduled to start much earlier in Montana, was “delayed indefinitely,” which has been majorly affected by the dual strikes. According to NBC Montana, Butte Civic Center manager Bill Melvin said he was contacted by the production of the Paramount+ series that filming had been postponed as the WGA strike continued. Filming for the sophomore season of 1923 was due to start on Monday, June 5, 2023, and according to Melvin, production is paying $75,000 a month to use the Civic Center through the end of the year.
But later, local news site KXLF (via Movie Web) reported that 1923 will no longer use the Butte Civic Center in Butte, Montana as their soundstage for the second season because of the delays in production. According to the local news website, the show might no longer shoot any episodes in Butte. This implies that the 1923 production team will need to locate a new location for filming, as noted by Movie Web. This can potentially cause the filming schedule to be further delayed. “It’s disappointing in the fact that people were looking forward to 1923 coming back and having production in town, but we understand,” Butte Chief Executive J.P. Gallagher confirmed.
This update was quite disheartening because the release window has now been shifted further. In the end, it’s safe to say that the last chapter will be delayed until next year, and for now, once the parties involved in the SAG-AFTRA strikes reach an agreement, it’s only then the filming can officially commence with the cast members.
“SAG-AFTRA congratulates the WGA on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP after 146 days of incredible strength, resiliency and solidarity on the picket lines. While we look forward to reviewing the WGA and AMPTP’s tentative agreement, we remain committed to achieving the necessary terms for our members,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement.
As a result, until there is any official confirmation, we will have to wait, hope for the best, and guess what will happen next! *Finger’s Crossed*

1923 Season 2 Plot: What to expect in the new season?
If you have streamed the show then you’ll know that this drama series follows a generation of the Dutton family in 1923, during a time of various hardships, including Prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression, which affected Montana’s long before the 1929 Stock Market Crash. The continuation of the plot from the prior season isn’t surprising, as 1923 Season 1 holds a 91% approval rating with an average rating of 7.0/10, based on 32 reviews by critics. On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the series has received a score of 67 out of 100 based on 15 critic reviews, indicating “generally favorable reviews.”
Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead!
The official logline for the second season hasn’t been disclosed, but it is speculated to continue the plot from the final episode, “Nothing Left to Lose,” which was directed by Ben Richardson and written by Taylor Sheridan. The plot of the episode follows: After the priests do not return, Father Renaud and Marshall Kent search for Teonna. Runs His Horse and Pete Plenty Clouds find Teonna and take her with them. Creighton is released without bail. Zane’s wife, Alice, is arrested for miscegenation, and Zane is beaten by police. Meanwhile, Spencer and Alex board a liner to London. Alex’s former fiancé, Arthur, challenges Spencer to a duel, which Spencer wins.
However, Arthur attacks him, and Spencer kills him in self-defense. Although not charged, Spencer is removed from the vessel at the nearest port. Alex learns her parents have arranged for her to return to London and that she cannot leave the ship. Seeing Spencer be taken away, she declares she will find him in Bozeman, Montana. Back at the Dutton ranch, Whitfield arrives to announce that he has paid their property tax, and if they cannot pay him back by the end of the year, the deed for the land will default into his possession. Elizabeth suffers a miscarriage.
Additionally, Sheridan told Deadline that Season two is really “the second half” of season one and will wrap up the story. He explained, “This one is different from 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got. Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight-episode block and a second eight-episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
Lastly, the series has been confirmed to run for only two seasons, with eight episodes each, finishing off the saga with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. So, we are certain that the stakes will be high for the series to complete its overall arc it will be exciting to see what the creators will be able to accomplish in the second season. Moreover, recently, Brandon Sklenar, who stars in the series as Spencer Dutton, told the Hollywood Reporter that the show would come to a definite conclusion at the end of season 2. “No, no, it’s bookend. [The series is] still limited, but I think of it as one piece—there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude,” he said.
1923 Season 2 Cast: Who will reprise their roles?
Even though it is not confirmed which main cast members from the series are expected to reprise their roles in the new season, we speculate that the following might certainly return: Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra, Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton, Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, Isabel May as the Narrator, Elsa Dutton, Brian Geraghty as Zane Davis, Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford, and Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield.
Moreover, the recurring cast members of the series who are speculated to reprise their roles are as follows: Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell, Jennifer Ehle as Sister Mary, Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud, Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton, Leenah Robinson as Baapuxti, Caleb Martin as Dennis, Brian Konowal as Clyde/Clive, and Michael Greyeyes as Hank Plenty Clouds. The guest stars from the first season aren’t expected to return, as they were supposed to be an addition for the first season only. But, it might change if the creators want to incorporate them in the second season.

1923 Season 2 Official Episode Count: Where to stream?
For the second season of 1923, just like the first one, we can assure the readers that the season will include a total of 8 episodes with an average runtime of 47–69 minutes. We would also like to highlight that right now, it is unknown whether the episodes will be split into two parts, as was done in the first season as we have observed that such a strategy might help with filming and post-production, keeping with the standard broadcast television paradigm, which has been done for years. So, until there is any confirmation, we’ll just have to wait and see what will be revealed in the coming weeks.
When 1923 Season 2 draws close to its release date, the series will be available exclusively on Paramount+, with other series of the same genre also accessible on the streaming platform with a range of membership options. It is an American subscription video-on-demand service owned by Paramount Global. You can watch thousands of episodes of your favorite shows on any device. Paramount+ includes on-demand and live content from CBS, BET, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon, among other services.

1923 Season 2 Official Trailer: Has it been released?
We all know that the filming of the second season hasn’t even commenced due to the halt in production, all thanks to the dual strikes that put a halt in the development of the season. As a result, the network has not published any new teasers or trailers for the next season, which usually drops a month or two prior to its official release, for which there is still a lot of time left. Additionally, the production team has been working diligently to ensure that the second season maintains the same level of quality and excitement as the first so any new promotional stuff will certainly take time to publish.
In the meantime, we urge the readers to check out the official recap of the first season, which gives a brief insight into the prior episodes before streaming the new ones.
Catch up on the first season, and let us know in the comments what you think of 1923 Season 2 being the final season.
