Will there be a Season 2 of Foundation?

Yes, Foundation has been officially renewed for a second season by Apple TV+ last year in October. The second season began filming in Prague, Czech Republic on April 11, 2022. According to the official press release by Apple TV+, Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, stated, “We have been so excited to watch global audiences embrace the captivating, suspenseful and breathtaking thrill ride that is ‘Foundation.’”

He further added, “We know how long fans of these beloved Asimov stories have waited to see his iconic work brought to life as a visually spectacular event series and now we can’t wait to showcase even more of the richly layered world, compelling storytelling and stunning world-building that David S. Goyer has created in season two.”

Moreover, Lee Pace who portrays Brother Day (Cleon XII and XIII), also shared the news about the series renewal, quoting, “Apple has picked up #foundation for a second season.” Take a look at the official post below:

Foundation Season 2 Release Date

The official release date of the upcoming season is yet to be revealed as of May 31, 2022. But looking at the release date of the previous season the fans have speculated that the next season will also make its debut sometime around late 2022. The majority of the viewers feel that the series will air sometime around the month of September this year.

We would like to highlight that this is just speculation at this point in time and the official dates will be confirmed by the network in a few coming months as the series draws close to making its debut on AppleTv+ and other details are released by the streaming platform.

Check out the first exclusive look shared by Apple TV+’s official Twitter handle, quoting, “The first look at #Foundation Season 2 is here, with Jared Harris, Lee Pace, and Laura Birn reprising their iconic roles in the Sci-Fi epic.”

Foundation Season 2 Plot

Though the exact plotline of the series is expected to be picked up right at the very moment Foundation Season 1 ended with Episode 10, The Leap, released on November 19, 2021. The episode was directed and written by David S. Goyer. The official synopsis states, “An unexpected ally helps Salvor broker an alliance; a confrontation between the Brothers leads to unthinkable consequences.”

We have highlighted some crucial key points from the finale episode of season one where the viewers got to see that Hari explains that the true goal of the Foundation was to create a new civilization with the help of Anacreon and Thespis. He proposes utilizing the Invictus to create a “megaflare” to make Terminus appear to be dead. Outer Reach would be able to develop in secret from the Empire as a result of this. On the Deliverance, Gaal and Raych conceive Salvor, who is carried to term by her mother Mari.

Hugo is captain of the Invictus a few months later, while Salvor is running for mayor of Terminus. Salvor departs Terminus in pursuit of Gaal after learning that her visions are the memories of her genetic parents. Gaal lands on Synnax in the year 12,240 E.I., where she discovers another pod submerged in spaceship debris and awakens Salvor, who tells her she is her daughter. Day learns later that the anti-Empire plot tampered with Cleon I’s body long ago, impacting not only all extant replacement clones but also Day and possibly his forefathers.

Moreover, in the same press release by Apple TV+, Matt Cherniss also hinted about the potential plotlines which the viewers should look forward to in the upcoming season.

He stated, “Since my childhood, I’ve dreamed of how Hari Seldon and Eto Demerzel would look and sound — what Terminus and Trantor would feel like,” said showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer. “Now, with season two, our audience will get to visit more of Asimov’s indelible characters and worlds, including Hober Mallow, General Bel Riose, and all the Outer Suns. I’m thrilled that a whole new generation of fans are reading Asimov’s brilliant masterwork. We’re playing the long game with ‘Foundation’ and I’m grateful to my partners at Apple and Skydance for entrusting me with this epic. Buckle up. We’re about to fold some serious space.”

Further adding, “David Goyer’s ‘Foundation’ has surpassed all my expectations by bringing my father’s philosophy and ideas to the screen in ways my father could never do while staying true to his work,” said Robyn Asimov, who serves as an executive producer on the series. “I know my father would have been proud to see his iconic story come to life through the show’s visual beauty and the layered characters, understanding full well his words would need this cinematic translation.

My father was deeply indebted to his fans, to their loyalty and always hoped his work would pass through to following generations. The ‘Foundation’ TV series is fulfilling his wish (and mine) by introducing his work to a vast array of new readers. Given the cerebral nature of the Foundation books, this series is a tour de force.”

Foundation Season 2 Cast

The Apple Original drama stars Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, and Cassian Bilton. Moreover, according to the official press release by Apple TV+, the new stars joining the cast of Foundation for Season 2 include:

Isabella Laughland as Brother Constant – a cheerfully confident claric whose job is to evangelize the Church of the Galactic Spirit across the Outer Reach. Constant is a true believer, whose courage and passion make her hard not to love.

Kulvinder Ghir as Poly Verisof – High Claric of the Church of the Galactic Spirit. Whip-smart and sardonic, he’s also a terrible drunk — intelligent enough to see the path he’s on, but too cynical to change.

Sandra Yi Sencindiver as Enjoiner Rue – the beautiful, politically savvy consigliere to Queen Sareth. A former courtesan to Cleon the 16th, Rue parlayed her status to become a royal counselor.

Ella-Rae Smith as Queen Sareth of Cloud Dominion – Used to being underestimated, Sareth employs it to her advantage, charming her way into the Imperial Palace with biting wit, all while on a secret quest for revenge.

Dimitri Leonidas as Hober Mallow – a master trader with a sarcastic personality and questionable morals, who is summoned against his will to serve a higher, selfless cause.

Ben Daniels as Bel Roise – the last great general of the Superliminal Fleet and would-be conqueror of the Foundation. Bel is noble to a fault, but his fealty to the Galactic Empire is waning.

Holt McCallany as Warden Jaegger Fount – the current Warden of Terminus and guardian of its citizens against external threats.

Mikael Persbrandt as The Warlord of Kalgan – a monster of a man, coiled with muscle and possessing powerful psychic abilities, and fueled by hate in his quest to take over the galaxy.

Rachel House as Tellem Bond – the mysterious leader of the Mentallics.

Nimrat Kaur as Yanna Seldon.
