Gaslit Season 1 Episode 3: A Quick Recap
The previous episode, King George, was released on May 8, 2022. The episode was directed by Matt Ross and written by Robbie Pickering & Amelia Gray.
The official synopsis of the episode states, “As John Mitchell and his subordinates struggle to manage the Watergate cover-up, Martha finds herself in a dangerous situation; John Dean puts his relationship on the back-burner.”

*Spoiler’s Ahead*
The episode begins with a flashback. When the plot dives into the point of time when Martha starts to worry about her father and her bullies, her father hands over his pocket watch to her. He believes that King George III of England gave the watch to their forefather which leads to Martha’s adherence to the story even after learning that her father had lied to her about the watch because his imagination was preferable to the truth. On the other hand, Martha’s father is implied to have committed suicide.

Eventually, Martha is locked in her hotel room in 1972, and she is desperate to get out. She proceeds to get her hands on a paper and learns about the Watergate arrests, despite her kidnappers’ refusal to let her watch the news. One of her abductors, Peter, terminates the phone and then physically assaults her. He also administers a tranquilizer to her and leaves her asleep until her family arrives.
Later in the episode, the viewers get to know about Hunt having a safe in the White House with records holding incredibly sensitive information, which Mitchell, Dean, and the others uncover. Now it is up to Dean to destroy those records. Meanwhile, FBI agents Angelo Lano and Paul Magallanes are assigned to the Watergate investigation. Although they originally believe the break-in was carried out by a gang of highly trained and intelligent individuals, they quickly discover that Liddy and Hunt are somehow involved in the crime.

By the end of the episode, we see Martha finally as she wakes up and notices that the security agents have left and that her family has returned. Mitchell states that after learning what the agents did to her, he fired both of them and resigned from the Nixon administration. At the end of the episode, we know that the phone conversation Martha had with Winnie will be crucial in toppling a president, and she will be demonized by the administration for it. The plot will continue in the next episode, which will air this weekend, and it will be just as thrilling as the series has been in handling the character arcs thus far.
