*Spoilers Ahead*
The previous episode, Year of the Rat, was released on June 5, 2022. The episode was directed by Matt Ross and written by Amelia Gray. The official synopsis of the episode states, “All hell breaks loose between Martha and John surrounding her decision to testify; John Dean is surprised by a new legal development as G. Gordon Liddy faces his own trial in solitary confinement.”
Moreover, the episode is estimated to be viewed by 0.266 million US viewers. We have highlighted the key takeaways of the episode that happened without spoiling major plotlines. First, let’s take a look at the official clip of the 7th episode, Acute Mental Illness, in which they tried to call her crazy because they couldn’t call her wrong.
This episode brings us back in time after what has to be a nicely presented recap that replenishes Liddy’s opening monologue from episode 1, which showed that the first time Martha and John met one another. John declares himself to be the “Year of the Rat” before canceling his blind date well before it begins because his date is married. After 17 years, we find ourselves right back where we left off in the flashback scene.
Now, the part that happens after that is obviously fictionalized, with John giving Senator Gurney dirt about Martha’s past being used for maximum impact, but director Matt Ross masterfully contrasting this part of him berating Martha about her psychological distress with her actual meltdown post-proceedings.
Even though the show is set in a time when her illness would be frowned upon, Roberts is so wonderful in this crucial sequence that she allows us to sympathize with her. Take a look at the official clip of the 7th episode, Rat Trap, in which the viewers get to see the mastermind behind Watergate.
Meanwhile, John and Martha spat hatred at one other, with John obviously gaslighting Martha for being a troubled lady who is always complaining about life. Things escalate into violence when John chokes Martha and tells her that he is abandoning her forever and taking Marty with him. The scene then shifts to Martha, who is plainly ill and blurry on-air with Barba Walters.
A major section of this disjointed show is about Gordon Liddy’s term of imprisonment at the same time, in a truly twisted and goofy piece. He writes long, strange letters to his wife, which he narrates in a Hitler-like manner.
His straight-up attitude puts him in solitary confinement, where he spends his days pondering and having to cope with a rat, as seen in prior episodes. Shea Whigham does an excellent job portraying Liddy’s character’s downward fall and insanity but was it all essential.
On the other hand, there is also John Dean, who is absent from the episode, but despite his testimony. The viewers know that John Dean and Mo will be forced to part when he is detained for a 5-year prison term. So, we have to anticipate the plot dynamics being stretched further for the viewers to get the appropriate context to the storyline.
