Is Gentleman Jack Season 3 canceled by HBO? Continue reading to learn more.
The second season ended on May 29, 2022, in the UK, and on June 13, 2022, in the US, viewers of the series have questions about the potential renewal of the series. After all, the show has gained a fairly good reception and a fan base over the course of just two seasons. So, it is fair to ask about the franchise’s current status, as many speculated whether the story will continue or not.
Unfortunately, we have some bad news for you. If you were looking forward to the next chapter of Gentleman Jack, the chance to binge-watch Gentleman Jack Season 3 was brief as the show has been canceled by HBO. The series is listed among the other TV series that were abruptly canceled by the network. Here is everything we know about Gentleman Jack Season 3’s cancellation.
Will there be a Season 3 of Gentleman Jack?
HBO announced in July 2022 that the series was canceled after two seasons. As a result, the series has no chance of being renewed by the network, as many original series have been reported to be canceled by major streaming platforms this year.
Even though the series didn’t get greenlit for more seasons, it had gained a large fanbase who were eager to see more seasons in order to have the good concluding storyline that these beloved characters truly deserved. Sadly, Gentleman Jack has fallen into a similar list of canceled series even if the show had the potential to get better after improving the screenplay with some new themes and introducing something new to the character arcs.
Why was Season 3 of Gentleman Jack canceled?
The announcement comes a little more than a month after the HBO season 2 premiere of the show, a co-production with the BBC. One of HBO’s lowest-rated original series, Gentleman Jack, premiered on the less popular Monday night. Its second season has been postponed due to the pandemic.
According to Deadline, “HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of Gentleman Jack,” the network said in a statement to Deadline. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers. We are incredibly grateful to Sally, to the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and to the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life. We’d also like to thank our partners at BBC and Lookout Point for their collaboration on two remarkable seasons.”
The official Instagram handle of Gentleman Jack also shared the cancelation update among their followers, quoting, “A message from Lookout Point, the producers of Gentleman Jack.” Take a look at the official post below:

The actors of HBO’s Gentleman Jack, Suranne Jones, and Sophie Rundle, also shared their thoughts on HBO’s cancellation of Sally Wainright’s period drama after two seasons, quoting, “While it is sad news Gentleman Jack will not be renewed, this show has brought so many together, enabled people to share their stories, brought joy, emotion, and creativity, and gave me a real connection to you as its audience,” Jones said in an Instagram post accompanied by an entertaining blooper reel.

“Anne Lister now has a statue in the Piece Hall. There is a Blue plaque in the Holy Trinity church yard celebrating Anne and Ann’s union in 1834. There is a college named after Anne Lister on the East campus at the University of York. Shibden now has more visitors than ever before and you will find Anne Lister walks, tours and trails galore when visiting Halifax and its surrounding areas.”
“I have never been involved in a show that has made such a huge impact and touched my heart like this one has,” Jones continued. “It wasn’t always the easiest job I’ve had… but it was always worth it to see the response it got.”
Rundle added: “What a privilege it has been to play Ann Walker and bring her and Anne Lister’s extraordinary love story back to life. I am so proud to have been a part of reclaiming their place in history…. I am overwhelmed by the love this show inspired. And PROUD. So fiercely proud.”
The BBC released a statement, expressing their pride in “a show which has made a huge cultural impact.”
“We are tremendously proud of Gentleman Jack, a show which has made a huge cultural impact, and we are in discussions with Sally about what’s next,” the BBC said in a statement.
Production company Lookout Point also released a statement, calling it “an absolute honour” to have brought “Anne Lister marching into the 21st Century…. Here’s to never conforming to the way people think a woman should look, or think, or be.”

Gentleman Jack Premise
In 1832, Miss Anne Lister leaves Hastings brokenhearted and heads to the lush landscape of Halifax, West Yorkshire, England to restore her uncle’s estate that she has inherited. While restoring the estate she finds that the family land has a coal mine and that it is being stolen by two brothers. This unusual lady landowner develops a potentially dangerous romance with another woman, which she records in a cryptic diary.
What could have been the plot of Gentleman Jack Season 3?
As of July 9, 2022, Gentleman Jack Season 2 has aired all 8 episodes of the series. The final episode of the series, It’s Not Illegal, was directed by Fergus O’Brien and written by Sally Wainwright. The official synopsis of the episode states, “Anne Lister and Ann Walker’s trip to London is blighted by tension. Anne refuses to introduce Ann to her society friends, and simmering resentments on both sides of the relationship boil over when Miss Walker takes Anne to task over her financial borrowing.”
If the third season of the series was renewed, the story would have picked up from this very moment and expanded upon to explore the character dynamics and subplots, which could have been beneficial for the viewers to tune in and watch the series for a long time. Moreover, these plot summaries provide viewers with a general idea of the plot, but not the complete picture that the show’s writers might have planned to be translated from the pages to the screen.
We can’t foresee what important details or surprises would have been discovered in the future seasons or how the season would have been concluded. Sadly, the run of the series was short-lived and the fans will not be able to foresee the ways these characters could have been developed. As a result, if the series had been renewed, which is unfortunate because it had opportunities to be explored further and viewers wanted to give it a chance.
