Ginny & Georgia Season 3: Accolades From Last Season

Ginny and Georgia Season 2 is not coming to Netflix in 2022

Ever since the comedy-drama series appeared on Netflix in 2021, viewers have been hooked on it, with each episode amping up the suspense radar until we see that beneath the warm, bubbly Southern accent of Georgia, there are secrets so dark that it may endanger her, and her entire family if and when unveiled. With a riveting slow suspense plotline and an intriguing yet soul-warming mother and daughter relationship with an adorable son, Ginny & Georgia Season 2 dethroned the all-time favorite crime thriller Kaleidoscope and reigned as the new top hit of Netflix in 2022.

After its first 28 days, the show had recorded 504.78 million hours watched globally, allowing it to break into Netflix’s all-time most-watched series list. Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia featured in the top 10 charts for seven weeks, recording 568.51 million hours watched.

Season 2 dropping also led to an increased viewership for season 1. Season 1 picked up 44.37 million additional hours in the week that season 2 was released, 63.23M in week 2, 43.29M in week 3, and 31.14 million in week 4.
Celebrating the news of hitting over half a billion hours on Netflix, Debra Fisher posted on Instagram a heartfelt message:

“This crew is like family. Everyone pictured (and many not present on set that day in Toronto) helped make this show a worldwide hit with over 500 million hours viewed (and counting). This is just a sliver of BTS of our phenomenal DP and extraordinary camera department.”

Ginny & Georgia Season 3 still not renewed? What's the catch?

Just when we thought Georgia was reaching the ideal life she manifested after all these years, Netflix inserted the worst cliffhanger of the decade without caution, and now we are left fawning over when and if Season 3 will continue from where Season 2 left off! If you are also hungover from the mind-numbing effect of Ginny & Georgia Season 2, we have come up with some interesting updates for the next season. Stick around till the end because we are here to clarify some unresolved doubts from Season 2.

Let’s skim through the facts again to determine its fate.

May 17th, 2023, marked the epic double renewal date for Ginny & Georgia Seasons 3 and 4. The production for Season 3 was set to begin in the fall of 2023, but it looks like the initial planning has to be reversed by the rampant double-strike situation that Hollywood is currently facing.

May 2023 witnessed the onslaught of the gravest writer’s protest in the form of the WGA union. Amidst the protest, several competing networks updated their fall broadcast schedules in anticipation of the dissipation of the strikes within the next month.
However, in July, the actors union SAG-AFTRA also joined in the protest for their wage rights and better protection against the hindsight of Artificial Intelligence. The last time such a large-scale strike sent Hollywood productions into an indefinite hiatus was 63 years ago! We are in the third month of this double-strike situation, and there are no hopes for reconciliation through negotiations.
In a recent meeting held for the first time in more than three months, the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Friday failed to reach an agreement to resume contract negotiations. Their inability to agree on terms for returning to the bargaining table comes after their much-anticipated meeting to discuss a possible resumption of talks.

“As of now, there is no agreement on these items, because the AMPTP said they needed to consult with their member studios before moving forward,” the union said in a statement last Friday.

Ginny & Georgia Season 3 Renewal Updates: Here is everything we know so far

This caused massive confusion and buzz amidst the fandom. We are currently nearing the end of three months of the strike, and no bouts of development or simmering down have been reported. However, we have come across a recent announcement sharing a possible retreat from the indefinite hiatus situation caused by the strike. Hollywood’s striking writers and major studios have agreed to hold talks on Friday for the first time since their strike began over higher pay demands in May 2023.

“We’ll be back in communication with you sometime after the meeting with further information,” the committee told its members in its note.

Though it seems like good news, that doesn’t mean that the chance of the series being delayed further is still on the table if the strikes gain more momentum and don’t reach a resolution within the next few weeks, especially after the meeting.

In recent news, it seems like the negotiations will stretch out till October, making an early 2024 release bleak. It takes about a year for the writing, filming, production, and post-production loop to end to give us a spectacular season. And after maintaining its stellar crown for the first two seasons, it would be treason for a third season that fell short of its promises. As of writing this, the production of Ginny & Georgia Season 3 remains on an indefinite hiatus, and until the demands of the two unions are met, we can’t expect the scripts to be ready for Season 3 anytime by the end of 2023.

However, if we were to make a calculated assumption based on the earlier patterns followed, if production begins by the end of 2023, we can set a release window expectation for Season 3 between the end of 2024 and early 2025. So, there are no expectations for September 2023, at least!

Ginny & Georgia Season 3 Plot: What Is Expected?

Ginny and Georgia Season 2: Here are some major spoilers for the upcoming season

The ending seconds of the Season 2 finale opened up an entire portal for the origination of a whole new plot! Looks like things will be moving from more casual-chic-dauntless moments to more serious monotonic ones.

Ginny & Georgia is one of those series that, once you start it, you can never stop asking questions about each and every plot that unravels before you throughout the Seasons. Also, it does not help the cause when we have to sit it out for two whole years before we get the next season to answer our questions. Looks like Ginny & Georgia Season 3 will not be a stranger to this trend.

Ginny and Georgia Season 2 is not coming to Netflix in August

*Spoiler Alert*

It is set on the riveting plotline, which reads, “angsty, awkward 15-year-old Ginny Miller (who) often feels more mature than her 30-year-old mother, the irresistible, dynamic Georgia Miller. After years on the run, Georgia desperately wants to put down roots in picturesque New England and give her family something they’ve never had: a normal life.”

According to showrunner and executive producer Debra J. Fisher, the scene is powerful enough to reveal the vulnerable side of Georgia that is seldom featured. She said,

“That moment is one of the most powerful moments for Georgia…Typically, she’s all that Southern charm and warmth on the outside and hiding her true darker self from everyone, especially Ginny. Georgia discovering the wolfsbane in the fireplace reveals one of her darkest secrets. Ginny now knows the truth – that she’s a murderer. But for Georgia, for better or worse, at her core, she will do anything for her kids. So, we felt it was one of the most powerful ways we could see that reaction we were craving.”

Fisher says,

“Georgia is such a mama bear and so protective of her children, [but] also simultaneously [has] this indignation of, ‘Look what I would do for you. These are the lengths I will go to protect you, and now, once you see the inner me, you leave?!’…Georgia is pissed for better or worse.”

Speaking to DigitalSpy, creator Sarah Lampert suggested that there are “a lot of really great possibilities” in the third season. She said,

“If Georgia is being charged with this crime, we have Zion, he’s Ginny’s dad, we have Gill in the picture now,” she said. “I think previous to this, he had no chance at custody because he was a convicted felon but who knows now, and we’ve got Paul, who’s the stepdad. We have so many golden possibilities for storytelling based on how rich these characters are. And based on how many surprises we want to throw into Season 3 that I’m being coy about but we do have it planned out.”

In conversation with The Wrap, Debra Fisher teased,

“We know where Season 3 begins and ends and we know the end game.”

Speaking to Deadline, Lampert revealed the possible tangent of Austin’s story in the third season:

“Austin isn’t squeaky clean. He’s a kid, but he stabbed someone in the hand with a pencil, he — was more than Ginny, seems very okay with the fact that his mom’s done all this stuff, he doesn’t seem fazed whatsoever (laughs)… That’s not true. If we get to Season 3, we’ll have to dig deep into what he saw transpire in Season 2 and the emotional ramifications of that.”

Additionally, she revealed the various possibilities of dealing with Cyntia’s reaction to Georgia’s arrest:

“Anything could happen. I think that Cynthia by no means wanted Georgia to do that. I think that it would shock her to find out, and obviously, we weren’t with her, We don’t know what happened off camera in between that scene that led to the arrest. But that would definitely be something that I think we would want to explore in Season 3.”
