Ever since its premiere on Netflix on January 5th, 2023, the second season of Ginny & Georgia has rightfully made its place in the Netflix top 10s. An American comedy-drama television series created by Sarah Lambert and run by Debra Fisher, Ginny & Georgia is about an “angsty, awkward 15-year-old Ginny Miller (who) often feels more mature than her 30-year-old mother, the irresistible, dynamic Georgia Miller. After years on the run, Georgia desperately wants to put down roots in picturesque New England and give her family something they’ve never had: a normal life.”
In the span of 10 episodes, the first of this comedy televised the demise of Georgia’s husband and the pair leaving Texas to move into a new town for a new chapter. The series broached upon a slew of themes ranging from crime, race, marriage, friendships, and self-harm, through the apt depiction of the mother-and-daughter duo, which was explored in even more detail in the second instalment of this coming-of-age drama.
This leads to the brewing question in the minds of the fans: will there be a third season of Ginny & Georgia? We have compiled all the latest information that we could gather on Ginny & Georgia season 3. So continue reading to expand your knowledge pool.
Is Ginny & Georgia officially renewed for a third season?
Dethroning Netflix’s smash hit crime thriller, Kaleidoscope, Ginny & Georgia season 2 has ascended to the top of the streaming giant’s charts. Amidst its’ ascending graph, would Netflix take a chance not renewing it? Obviously, not!
In fact, quite recently, Netflix renewed the show for two additional seasons. Yes! You have read it right. The streaming giant renewed Ginny & Georgia for seasons 3 and 4 on May 17th, 2023. Additionally, Deadline reports that Sarah Glinkski has replaced Debra J. Fisher as the showrunner for the upcoming seasons.

When it comes to the renewal of any season, Netflix takes into consideration a variety of factors that determine the fate of the show, including viewing hours, number of people watching, completion rates, and more. However, the streaming giant continues to maintain discretion regarding the determining factors that are at play for renewing the season. Regardless, considering the phenomenal performance of the first two seasons of Ginny & Georgia, Netflix was left with no option but to renew the show.
What is the overall performance of Ginny & Georgia season 2 on Netflix?
In the first week of season 2’s release, the show was 200M hours away from beating season 1; once that happens, all the ambiguity of the renewal will be washed away, and the fans will get one more treat from the creators of the show. Not only that, but the reports also point to the increased viewership of season one ever since season 2 premiered. Not only that but interestingly the show amassed over 504.78 million hours globally, breaking Netflix’s all-time most-watched series list record, at the tail end of Inventing Anna.
As per the data, season 1 garnered 44.37 million additional hours, the week season 2 was released. What’s more, the Top 10 report for the week ending January 8th, Ginny & Georgia was touted to be “the best launch for a returning English-speaking series released on a Thursday.”
The reason why this coming-of-age drama has harnessed its own devoted audience is its proclivity to fuse the mother-daughter dynamics on-screen with a murder mystery, suspense, moral ambiguity, friendship, and its related themes. According to RadioTimes, more than 52 million member households watched the first season in its first 28 days of premiere. Moreover, it ascended to make the top 10 list in 87 countries across the globe.
Showrunner Debra Fisher celebrated the news of crossing half a billion hours on Netflix by posting an emotional message on Instagram, which said:
“This crew is like family. Everyone pictured (and many not present on set that day in Toronto) helped make this show a worldwide hit with over 500 million hours viewed (and counting). This is just a sliver of BTS of our phenomenal DP and extraordinary camera department.”

Additionally, as per Neilson Insights, which offers a bit more demographic information regarding the audience for Ginny & Georgia,
“Ginny & Georgia’s audience stayed true to form, decidedly 18-34 (34%) and female (76%) capitalizing on the niche where shows like Friends, Grey’s Anatomy and Gilmore Girls have been having extended streaming success. In fact, G&G actually had a broader demographic base than the others, as Greys derives half of its audience from the 18-34 bucket, Friends 58% and Gilmore Girls a whopping 64%.”
What to expect from Ginny & Georgia Season 3?
The second season of the coming-of-age teen drama explored Georgia’s past including her disturbing history with Austin’s father Gil (Aaron Ashmore) with his reentry into the frame from his prison. Running parallel to Georgia’s story, we find Ginny struggling to accept her mother’s identity as a murderer with the MANG, her group of high school girlfriends, falling out. Amidst all of this chaos, Ginny battles to maintain her mental health.
According to showrunner and executive producer Debra J. Fisher, the scene is powerful enough to reveal the vulnerable side of Georgia that is seldom featured. She said, “That moment is one of the most powerful moments for Georgia…Typically, she’s all that Southern charm and warmth on the outside and hiding her true darker self from everyone, especially Ginny. Georgia discovering the wolfsbane in the fireplace reveals one of her darkest secrets. Ginny now knows the truth – that she’s a murderer. But for Georgia, for better or worse, at her core, she will do anything for her kids. So, we felt it was one of the most powerful ways we could see that reaction we were craving.”
Fisher says, “Georgia is such a mama bear and so protective of her children, [but] also simultaneously [has] this indignation of, ‘Look what I would do for you. These are the lengths I will go to protect you, and now, once you see the inner me, you leave?!’…Georgia is pissed for better or worse.”
Speaking to DigitalSpy, creator Sarah Lampert suggested that there are “a lot of really great possibilities” in the third season. She said, “If Georgia is being charged with this crime, we have Zion, he’s Ginny’s dad, we have Gill in the picture now,” she said. “I think previous to this, he had no chance at custody because he was a convicted felon but who knows now, and we’ve got Paul, who’s the stepdad. We have so many golden possibilities for storytelling based on how rich these characters are. And based on how many surprises we want to throw into Season 3 that I’m being coy about but we do have it planned out.”
Season two ends on a cliffhanger with the wedding being cut short as Gabriel and the police crash into the venue and Georgia is arrested. Under what charge? She allegedly murdered Cynthia’s husband, Tom. What?! I mean, who in the world would have thought that season 2 would end on such a flabbergasting note?
In an interview with DigitalSpy, Nathan Mitchell, who reprised the role of Zion Miller, said:
“I’d love to see where things go with Simone. I think it’s always fun when you throw Georgia in the mix there, where you have those three together, and have them navigate this new dynamic that they exist in.”
On a more romantic front of the series, this is what Antonia Gentry and Felix Mallard had to say about their characters’ relationship, with E! Online, “I think they’ll always be in each other’s lives… They have something extremely special: They have an understanding between each other, and that no one else really has.”
In conversation with The Wrap, Debra Fisher teased, “We know where Season 3 begins and ends and we know the end game.”
Speaking to Deadline, Lampert revealed the possible tangent of Austin’s story in the third season:
“Austin isn’t squeaky clean. He’s a kid, but he stabbed someone in the hand with a pencil, he — way more than Ginny, seems very okay with the fact that his mom’s done all this stuff, he doesn’t seem fazed whatsoever (laughs)… That’s not true. If we get to Season 3, we’ll have to dig deep into what he saw transpire in season two and the emotional ramifications of that.”
Additionally, she revealed the various possibilities of dealing with Cyntia’s reaction to Georgia’s arrest:
“Anything could happen. I think that Cynthia in no means wanted Georgia to do that. I think that it would shock her to find out, and obviously we weren’t with her, we don’t know what happened off camera in between that scene that led to the arrest. But that would definitely be something that I think we would want to explore in Season 3.”
