In a world where fairy tales come to life, the director behind the iconic ‘Barbie’ movie has finally found her own real-life Ken.
In a heartwarming celebration of love and artistic collaboration, Greta Gerwig and her longtime partner, Noah Baumbach, have finally taken their relationship to the next level by exchanging vows after an incredible 12 years together in the vibrant city of “The Big Apple,” as the adorable couple married at New York City Hall, and later celebrated at Billy Joel concert.
The happy news was confirmed to PEOPLE by an official representative for the newlywed duo of the renowned director, 40, and screenwriter, 54, who have managed to nurture a beautiful partnership that has blossomed both on and off the screen.
As they embark on this new chapter of their lives, their union serves as an inspiration to all couples who strive to balance their personal and professional lives while being creative powerhouses that have conquered the realms of filmmaking together. As for the fantasy comedy Barbie (2023), the couple worked as an inspiring collaborative unit for a massive project, with Gerwig helming the role of director from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. As of writing this, the film which is based on the fashion dolls by Mattel, eventually became the first film by a solo female director to gross over $1 billion worldwide.
Talking about their ever-lasting partnership in an industry that demands so much from the people working behind the scenes, Baumbach has spoken to Vogue about why he enjoys working alongside his now-wife:
“I think the pleasure of writing for us is that it seeps into everything. I’d show her a cut of my movie, and then a few months later, I’m watching her movie. I don’t want to sound sickeningly happy, but it’s a truly great thing to watch someone you love make something and love the thing they make. I don’t know how else to say it without saying great a lot,” he told the outlet.
The couple has lived in Manhattan since late 2011, and they have two sons together. The new addition, born in February 2023, joined the couple’s first son, Harold Ralph Gerwig Baumbach, whom they welcomed in March 2019. The proud parents announced that they had quietly welcomed a second son in an interview with Elle UK published in July.
“The little guy is sleeping through the night. But I’m still doing that thing where I wake up every hour to 90 minutes and just hover. You just keep wanting to look at that baby. So I’m slightly in a twilight state.” – The Lady Bird director told the outlet.
In 2020, both were individually nominated for Oscars in the same year. Baumbach’s film Marriage Story received numerous accolades, the film received six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Adam Driver ), Best Actress (Scarlett Johansson) and Best Original Screenplay, while Gerwig’s Little Women, which she also directed, garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh ), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score, and won for Best Costume Design.
Most recently, the upcoming musical fantasy film “Disney’s Snow White,” directed by Marc Webb, will be adapted for the big screen from a screenplay by Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. Whereas, the ‘Barbie’ co-writer, Noah Baumbach, will once again be seen taking on the role of director for a new movie for which he is teaming up with George Clooney and Adam Sandler.
