The episode starts with Nick starting to work locum at Grey Sloan under a begrudging Bailey, who continues to stress and show anger to Nick, Meredith, and the other attendings about the program’s state. Webber inadvertently drinks a marijuana drink from Catherine’s fridge, ruining his sobriety and forcing Meredith to reschedule her day to keep an eye on him.
Jo and Link get into an argument about spending time together, and butts head over a past patient of Link’s who comes in with recurring cancer. In family therapy, Teddy and Owen argue about Leo’s gender identity, with Owen comfortable with it but Teddy is frustrated by the lack of clear actions to follow. As he takes over Meredith’s duties, Nick and Bailey butt heads.
During surgery, Bailey sees Nick provide good instruction to Schmidt. As their patient admits to lying to her wife about her symptoms, Maggie and Winston butt heads, forcing Winston to lash out due to his recent problems with his brother, and Maggie eventually tosses him out of surgery. Winston later confesses to Maggie that his brother lied to her about the heart monitors.
When Jo and Link inform their patient’s wife that he may not survive this bout of cancer, she demands that the baby be born so that her husband can meet him, further enraging Jo and Link. After their disagreement, Jo admits that she loves Link, but he refuses to acknowledge that he feels the same way. Bailey apologizes for her recent rage and admits to Meredith that she is unsure what to do about the program. Richard eventually learns that Katherine’s cancer has returned and advanced.
