Why did HBO Max renew Hacks for Season 3?

According to Deadline, the second season saw a big rise from season one; the streamer said that its season two opener was 125% above its season one debut last year. Hence, it is not surprising at all the network decided to renew the series for another season after such a great response from the critics and audience.

We know that in Season 2 of Hacks, audiences were treated to a look at the series’ expanding dark mentorship between veteran Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance and her young, entitled writer Ava. As revealed by the finale of Season 2 Episode 8, The One, the Only, released on June 2, 2022.

The episode was directed by Trent O’Donnell and written by Lucia Aniello & Paul W. Downs & Jen Statsky. In the finale episode, the viewers got to see that, at a Sotheby’s auction, Deborah and Marty competed against each other. Ava accepts Taylor’s offer of a one-week job in Los Angeles.

Janet is pinching Jimmy’s clients, Jimmy discovers. Marty consented to let Deborah tape her special at the Palmetto, Deborah tells Marcus. Deborah insists that Ava accept the job offer, even if it means missing the taping. Janet meets with Deborah the night before the taping to explore taking over her representation.

Ava arrives early from L.A. in order to be present for the taping. A man sitting next to Jimmy passes out in the middle of the tape. The man is carried out by the doctors and dies in the lobby. Jimmy returns to the theatre and reports that the man is well.

The taping is still going on, and it’s going well. Deborah assures Jimmy that his father would be proud of him, and then she informs Janet that she will be staying with Jimmy as her agent. Deborah’s unique DVD is available on QVC, and it sells out in minutes. Jimmy phones Deborah to inform her that all of the major networks are interested in purchasing the show’s rights.

Deborah fires Ava and tells her that she must climb her own mountain. Jimmy calls Ava to offer her a job on the show she helped write in L.A., as well as to inform her that Deborah has dropped the case. The screen is on QVC, and Deborah is smiling as the camera pans away.
