An Australian reboot of the 90s show, Heartbreak High is a high school romance drama set in the contemporary era. Released in September 2022, it parallels the fame of other titles in the genre, such as Elite and Heartstopper.
Released on September 14th, 2022, the series received a lot of critical acclaims, owing to its modernized romance genre that grips the viewers from the first episode to the last. It would come off as a surprise if it hadn’t been renewed for a second season.
Created by Hannah Carroll Chapman, the series is modelled around the life of a new generation of students attending Hartley High as they struggle with issues related to love, sex, and heartbreak.
Here’s all you need to know about Heartbreak High Season 2.
When was Heartbreak High officially renewed for the second season?
Heartbreak High was officially renewed for a second season on October 19, 2022, by Netflix Australia. According to the press release:
“School is officially back in session, as Netflix has announced Heartbreak High will return for Season 2.
Produced by Fremantle Australia and NewBe, season 2 of Heartbreak High will see the talented cast and creators reassemble in Sydney (Gadigal, Dharug, Dharawal, and Ku-ring-gai lands), Australia for pre-production and filming.”
Before the show received this official renewal, the rumors for the same had already taken off with The Daily Telegraph in Australia reporting on October 2nd, that the show was renewed for a second season.
The reason for a relatively late renewal could be indebted to the slow start on Netflix. Initially, the show failed to perform significantly beyond Australian boundaries. However, thanks to TikTok, its popularity soon spiked (as it did for other shows like Ginny & Georgia, and Purple Hearts), achieving 12.5B views on TikTok.
What is the production status of Heartbreak High season 2?
Per Netflix, the principal photography of the season began on May 29, 2023 and is scheduled to last till August 29th, ‘23. Once they have wrapped filming, the episodes will immediately enter post-production where they will expectantly spend six to seven months.

What can we expect to happen in Heartbreak High season 2?
*Spoiler Alert*
In season 1, we saw Harper and Amerie getting back together after she unveiled her trauma with Chook. According to Elle, “In season two, we’ll likely see the BFFs take more revenge on Chook, who clearly needs to be put in his place.” Consequently, Amerie and Harper would try to figure out a way to get Chook arrested since he was not caught for an attempted sexual assault like others.
The second season will also deal with Harper’s accommodation since she can’t stay with Amerie forever. With her father being discharged from the hospital, the new season might also explore the father-daughter relationship and how it evolves.
In addition to this, Amerie’s relationship with Malakai is seemingly dying out; however, there’s more to what the eye can see. Will they get back together? Do they have feelings for each other? With Malakai exploring his sexuality in the first season, the immediate successor might plausibly culminate into a formulation of his identity.
Heartbreak High Season 2 will also likely throw more insights into Darren and Cash’s potential romance and maybe turn the potential into a reality. Who knows?

How many episodes will be featured in Heartbreak High season 2?
At the time of writing this article, Netflix Australia has not confirmed the episode count for season 2. Be that as it may, we presume that the new season of Heartbreak High would constitute eight episodes, like its predecessor. However, this is just our assumption, you can take this piece of information with a grain of salt.
When can we expect Heartbreak High season 2 to arrive on Netflix?
The streaming giant has not confirmed the release date for Heartbreak High season as of yet. Considering that the season has just entered production, we don’t expect the show to release this year at all. We presume the show to enter post-production by the end of ’23, which will probably take six to seven months.
Once the season is through post-production, we expect it to hit the Netflix library in the first quarter of 2024.
