Is Chicago P.D. Season 11 canceled?

As the popular drama television series from Wolf Entertainment’s One Chicago franchise, Chicago P.D. will continue to follow the uniformed patrol officers and the Intelligence Unit of the 21st District of the Chicago Police Department as they pursue the perpetrators of the city’s major street offenses, is not going anywhere as it was given an early renewal for a twelfth season back on April 10, 2023, along with its sister shows Chicago Fire and Chicago Med. Yes, you heard it right!

The network is continuing the tale of Chicago P.D. for another season, as there is no chance that a known network like NBC will lean towards scrapping an important legacy show that has become very close to prime-time television viewers around the world. The series has been able to capture interest for a while, and there is no doubt that it is not going to wane anytime soon. So, the fans can breathe a sigh of relief and buckle up by speculating what new adventure awaits them and what the beloved show has to offer the One Chicago fans!

Here is everything we know so far about NBC’s Chicago P.D. Season 11.

Is Chicago P.D. Season 11 canceled?

Chicago P.D. Season 11 Release Date: Will it be released in 2023 or not?

Firstly, we want to get straight across the point that the official release date for Chicago P.D. Season 11 has not been acknowledged by the NBC network, which is quite unfortunate because we know that the fans are very excited to see the uniformed patrol officers and the Intelligence Unit of the 21st District of the Chicago Police Department as they pursue the perpetrators of the city’s major street offenses. As they beam their way back onto our screens once again with the hopes of it once again becoming one of the longest-running scripted U.S. primetime television series on the network.

Sadly, all these latest updates that shed some light on the subject were short-lived, as the previously confirmed schedule for Chicago P.D. Season 11 has undergone some major changes!

Is Chicago P.D. Season 11 canceled?

We say this with a bit of assurance because NBC has revised their fall schedules, and now the majority of the scripted shows, which includes the entirety of the One Chicago series, which includes the three series named Chicago P.D., Chicago Med., and Chicago Fire, are set to make their official comeback with the best release window for 2024. The new seasons of the three One Chicago series will start airing every Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in order to avoid any further disruption caused by the dual strikes and disclose new details in the near future.

Hence, any hopes for the series’ official release date in 2023 for Chicago P.D. Season 11 is not possible! The only thing that has been confirmed by the network so far is that on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, the NBC network will start premiering reruns of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. to fill up the empty slots in the primetime schedule that are caused by the ongoing dual strikes, which include the 2023 WGA and 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Additionally, the shows that were filmed ahead of the dual strikes have been moved up from their original mid-season slot to occupy the empty slots in the fall schedule. There is no question that this has happened due to the ongoing dual strikes that failed to meet an agreement, putting a temporary halt in working Hollywood until a proper resolution regarding the compensation of the writers and actors is made for the work to effectively resume and the production to conclude on time without causing any further hurdles or delays in the release.

Moreover, LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Kevin Atwater, discussed the strike during a recent master class lecture at LSU. “Naturally, after the writers strike, it’s going to take the writers a while to start warming up their rooms again and starting to conceptualize stories again,” he told the LSU audience. “So we might need a three-week buffer.” Further adding, “From my personal research, we have a big hill to climb before we can find an agreement.” “I’m faithful and optimistic that it will only be a couple more months if that, that we’re off.”

So, if we look at this current status, one thing is pretty clear: no new release date will be confirmed anytime soon, and NBC might also be considering taking a step forward as there is no chance for the production of the new season to commence even by late October 2023, which will lead to delays in post-production, eventually forcing the creators to skip the 2023 fall schedule and modify the release window by confirming it to premiere sometime around the first quarter of 2024, starting from January to March, because this situation doesn’t seem to get resolved anytime soon.

At last, we can hope that there is still a chance that the only update we get in the coming weeks will be that the network decides to publish the show’s revised release dates in order to avoid further confusion. Until then, we’ll just have to wait and see! The good thing is that the network is all set to continue the tale of Chicago P.D. for the sake of all prime-time television viewers around the world who have showered so much love on this show over 10 seasons, which is quite an achievement!

Chicago P.D. Season 11 Plot: What to expect from the new season?

Due to an early renewal with the efforts to not reveal many spoilers, not much has been disclosed about the potential future plotlines of this spin-off series from the One Chicago franchise, but we are certain the new season will definitely explore the basic premise, which will take viewers on a thrilling ride, delving deeper into the intriguing world that has captivated audiences for years. With its well-developed characters and gripping storylines, fans can expect a perfect blend of suspense, drama, and unexpected twists that will leave them eagerly anticipating each new episode!

So, to get some context, check out the official premise of the series, which is as follows:

“Chicago P.D.’s Intelligence Unit investigates the city’s most formidable offenses – drug trafficking, organized crime, high-profile murders, and other large-scale felonies. The squad – made up of Voight, Trudy Platt, Kim Burgess, Adam Ruzek, Kevin Atwater, Jay Halstead, and Hailey Upton – is committed to protecting the city and seeking truth, but in the midst of a changing criminal justice system, the team struggles to maintain peace in the community. Voight must learn to adapt to a shifting sociopolitical climate and embrace new tactics to crack down on crime in the city he loves.”

“I’m pleased to continue my four-decade relationship with Universal Television and NBC,” Dick Wolf said in a statement of his own. “All six shows being picked up again is the ultimate accolade to our incredible casts, producers, and writers. I’d also like to thank our loyal fans who have kept our NBC shows on the air for what will be a cumulative 84 seasons.”

Warning: The following passage contains some major spoilers!

Recently, NBC Insider highlighted that fans hope Burgess and Ruzek maintain their newly-rekindled romance after spending the past three seasons as platonic co-parents. “If Instagram comments are any indication, most of the fans are like, ‘Just leave them alone, leave them alone,'” Flueger told NBC Insider. “So I think we’ve got enough opportunities for drama on our show that maybe you’ll actually be able to see two people just kind of be happy together.” He continued, “[Marina and I have] definitely both told the writers—and, you know, we can tell them anything we want, but it doesn’t mean they’re going to listen—that if they break us up again, like, please let’s not try this again because it’s too much. It’s too much.”

It’ll also be interesting to see how Upton continues to (not) deal with Halstead’s absence after he left Chicago for Bolivia following Jesse Lee Soffer’s exit from the show. “This ultimately will change her in some way, which I’m interested to see how,” Spiridakos told Variety. “We’re still in the change. She finds out that he’s extended his stay and has that breakdown moment of having this hope and then all of a sudden, that’s gone. It’s the first time we see her break down since he’s left, since their goodbye. I think there’s gonna be some changes for her over the next little while.”

Lastly, the new season will also pick up the plot from the 10th season finale episode, “A Better Place,” which was directed by Chad Saxton and written by Gwen Sigan. In the episode, the viewers got to see that “As Richard Beck’s timeline for a deadly attack moves up and Samantha panics, Ruzek, and the team scramble to get ahead of an unprecedented disaster.” This jaw-dropping cliffhanger is enough to build up the hype for the next season, as it leaves various opportunities for the creators to add more twists and turns to this beloved police drama series! We also urge you to take a look at the official promo of the finale episode below to get some insight into how the 10th season ended:

Chicago P.D. Season 11 Cast: Who will reprise their roles?

As of writing this, we are certain that the following main cast members and recurring cast members of the series are expected to reprise their roles in the new season: Jason Beghe as Sergeant Hank Voight, Tracy Spiridakos as Detective Hailey Upton, Marina Squerciati as Officer Kim Burgess, Patrick John Flueger as Officer Adam Ruzek, LaRoyce Hawkins as Officer Kevin Atwater, Benjamin Levy Aguilar as Officer Dante Torres, and Amy Morton as Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt.

Moreover, Jesse Lee Soffer walking away from “Chicago P.D.” in Season 10 was a significant departure from the police drama. In an exclusive interview with Variety, he explained, “I really wanted to grow and expand, and we’ve only got this one trip. If I signed up again, it would have been for another three years. I would have turned 40 on the show. I thought, ‘You know what? It’s time to take a risk.’ It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life.”

“We understand the emotional connection our audience has with these characters and we can’t wait to bring more of their stories to the forefront next season,” Lisa Katz, the president of scripted programming at NBC Universal and Streaming, said in a statement. Further adding, “A huge thank you to Dick and his amazing team who are the masters of producing incredibly compelling television week after week.”

In addition to Wolf, executive producers are Gwen Sigan, Chad Saxton, Rick Eid, Gavin Harris, Jason Beghe, Arthur Forney, Peter Jankowski, and Michael Brandt. There are reports also indicating that co-creator and co-showrunner Derek Haas will be exiting or stepping away from Wolf Entertainment. Chicago P.D. Season 11 Official Episode Count: Where to stream?

As we know, the network is facing a major hurdle that has completely overshadowed the cheerful 2023-24 NBC’s fall schedule because of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, which sadly are still in the negotiation stage with the recent meeting between the WGA and the AMPTP.  Due to this, major production houses across many networks have stopped all work due to a lack of writers and actors until a proper agreement is made, which they truly deserve to have for their efforts in creating some of the most memorable series in recent times!

Hence, if these strikes don’t reach a resolution anytime soon, many changes will soon be happening behind the scenes, with the first step being revising the standard 22-episode order, as the count will definitely have to go down to 18 to 20 episodes. NBC Chicago has also reported that these strikes could also result in the season being shortened due to the lack of episode scripts and the writer’s room not resuming their work until a proper resolution, which will eventually lead to production delays, quote, “They could be forced to cut seasons short or delay filming altogether,” the outlet added.

In simple terms, many have anticipated that the forthcoming season will be shorter than previous ones because even if the dual strikes are called off in a few weeks, the writers will not have to rush to finish writing the scripts if they want to remain on the schedule, as there won’t be pressure to complete so many episodes in such a short amount of time in order to maintain its high standard by not attempting to stretch plots. In this situation, it’s preferable to get a shortened season with 15 to 18 episodes that incorporate high-quality plotlines than to try to release all 22 to 24 episodes.

Chicago P.D. Season 11 Official Trailer: Has it been released?

As we know, despite being renewed back in April 2023, the filming status is neither here nor there, but we speculate that the production will commence once the 2023 Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike along with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike reaches a resolution, as it’s only then that the writers and actors will get the proper time to resume their work and create episodes that will follow up the series storyline and character arcs, which the audience loves to watch. Hence, there is no doubt that this will cause more delays in the official release!

In short, due to the halt in production, no new teaser or trailer has been released for Chicago P.D. Season 11

Until then, we encourage viewers to stream the entire three series of the One Chicago franchise to stream on NBC, Peacock, FuboTV, and Hulu Plus.
