Dropped on Netflix in October 2022 globally, Enola Holmes 2 underscored Millie Bobby Brown yet again as its eponymous heroine, the young detective-for-hire, solving her first major case. However, it’s been more than a year since the second season of this enthralling show, and we have not heard a word about the third season until recently.
Based on Nancy Springer’s series of novels based on its eponymous heroine, Enola Holmes, the sequel follows the teenage sister of Sherlock Holmes, who uses some of the most eccentric tricks to solve cases. Breaking the fourth wall, Enola Holmes is an infallible amalgamation of humor and mystery that had a perfect mid-pandemic release on the streaming giant in 2020.
The fans’ anticipation must have indubitably culminated in frustration, especially because the second part was left open-ended. With such a major cliffhanger looming post-credits, it is impossible not to have the third season. But it seems that Netflix is tracing steps for its young female detective to come back home. In other words, Enola Holmes 3 is apparently being worked on as of now.
Enola Holmes 3 in the works
In an exclusive interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Head of Netflix Film, Scott Stuber shared an exhilarating update that will indubitably astonish the detective fanatics. Stuber unraveled Netflix’s inclination for a threequel of this detective fiction to materialize into reality. In addition, he also shared with Collider that a screenplay is in the works for a third Enola Holmes film.
During the interview held at the occasion for the grand reopening of the American Cinematheque at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood, Stuber praised their “homegrown star” Millie Bobby Brown and shared his excitement in continuing to tell Enola’s story with her:
“You know, she’s such a great homegrown star for us. I mean, obviously, Stranger Things is huge for us in that, and watching her grow as an actress. We have a film called Damsel with her in the spring, which I’m really excited about, [from] Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Then, getting that character right. The Holmes IP is weirdly elastic. Obviously, Warner Bros. did an incredible job with Downey and Jude Law, so this idea that we can extend that IP with her is exciting. So, we’re working once again on a screenplay to try to get that. But yes, aspiration. I’d like to do another one.”
Earlier in a conversation with ScreenRant in November 2022, Millie Bobby Brown expressed her desire to work for another part, saying, “I would love to be a part of another one. I would love to see her do more cases, be put under pressure, be put in crazy situations, make her feel vulnerable again. I absolutely love seeing her back at work.”
Brown has indeed given her top-notch performance in the first two parts, praised exceedingly by the critics. The unique spin on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes was appreciated and welcomed, as manifested by its exponential viewership charts on Netflix.
Although Stuber has showcased Netflix’s proclivity for a threequel of this unique detective fiction and revealed the scripts being worked upon, it’s prudent to wait for a solid confirmation. As ScreenRant rightly puts it, “Scripts are developed all the time by studios that never see the light of the day.”
Be that as it may, the future of Enola Holmes looks bright since the first two parts garnered phenomenal success. The official streamer would not want to just do away with it.
What could be the plot of Enola Holmes 3?
Although it’s too early to presume the narrative framework of the threequel, it’s not too early to deduce that the sequel has already set the stage for the potential third part to work upon. Based on how things went haywire in the sequel, one is not wrong to conclude that Enola’s London adventures have just begun.
The sequel concluded with Enola opening a new London office for her exponential detective agency behind Edith’s (Susan Wokoma) jiu-jitsu studio. On a more romantic front, Enola and Tewksbury (Louis Partridge) confessed their love for one another.
When it comes to her older brother, the esteemed Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), the sequel showcased him having a new flatmate, who is none other than Dr. John Watson (Himesh Patel). The sequel ends with Sherlock Holmes’ infamous nemesis Moriarty (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) escaping police custody and is currently on the loose.
Although Enola Holmes 2 has deviated from the book in some respects, the events happen in more or less chronological order. Expectantly, Enola Holmes 3 will be based on Springer’s third book, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets. The third novel begins with Enola refusing to go to finish school in order to help locate Dr. John Watson. The threequel of the Netflix adaptation is expected to characteristically add more flourishes and expand on the romantic front of Enola’s life, in addition to her detective one.
Enola Holmes 2 Cast
Headlined by Millie Bobby Brown as the eponymous heroine, it is impossible to imagine the threequel without her. In addition, Stuber had earlier appreciated the “homegrown star”. Therefore, it only seems natural to expect her to be Enola in the third part as well.
Henry Cavill is also expected to reprise the role of her older grumpy brother, Sherlock. However, PopSugar expressed uncertainty over the actor donning the role. Alluding to his departure from The Witcher, the outlet stated, “It’s not clear if Cavill leaving “The Witcher” means he won’t appear in any more Netflix projects, or if he’ll be open to appearing in any more Enola Holmes films.” Later, it also stated that “if it did come to that, Netflix might choose to recast Cavill in the Enola Holmes film series, too.”
Besides that, Helena Bonham Carter, who reprised the role of Eudoria, the Holmes matriarch, is expected to be the stalwart cast member in the third season as well.
Enola Holmes 3 release date expectation
Since Netflix has not given any solid confirmation, it is difficult to presume the arrival of Enola Holmes 3. Be that as it may, if the scripts are underway, ScreenRant assumes it will “be released in early 2025.”
