Are the final goodbyes to the Sheldon family nearing close? Here is everything we know so far about Young Sheldon season 7.
Even though the sixth season hasn’t premiered all its episodes, which will fortunately not conclude in the spring season. So, there is still a lot of time left to catch up with the antics of Young Sheldon, as the finale episode is scheduled to air on the 2023-24 summer broadcast which is Thursday, May 18, 2023, at the same time slot of 8/7c on CBS, and it will later be available to stream on Paramount Plus.
This is a major relief for the fandom, who have invested their time into streaming the show since its inception, as once again they have started to wonder if the story of Sheldon Lee Cooper is coming to an end or not. We have noticed that many series usually tend to conclude before it even hits the 10-season mark, which is ideal to not draw out the story if it doesn’t have much potential left or anything new to offer the audience.
Leading to this scenario, it has become an even more crucial question to address as the comedy series is two years into the three-year renewal which was handed down to CBS back in 2021 and will conclude with the already renewed Season 7, which will air in the 2023–2024 broadcast season. According to the latest reports, the seventh season will premiere sometime in the Fall of 2023, and it can be the show’s final outing if we have to predict.
Putting a sort of official stamp to these rumors about, “Young Sheldon Season 7 being the last season,” was none other than executive producer Steve Holland who told TVLine in a new interview, quote, “We’ve certainly started to talk about it.” Further adding, “When you’re in the middle of a season, it’s such a grind that we haven’t had too many in-depth conversations. But now, as we’re getting to the end [of Season 6], we’ve started to talk about it more.”
The fandom has also pointed out that Sheldon will be turning 14 during Season 7 which is a crucial point in the story in relation to Big Bang Theory. If you recall, at this age, according to the Big Bang timeline, the future Nobel Prize winner transfers from Medford, Texas to Pasadena, California, to start his graduate studies at CalTech University. Later, we also discover that Sheldon’s father George passes away in the same year that his older sibling Georgie marries for the first time.
So, there are chances that the next season will be aiming to conclude the show without dragging it without purpose.
“There are certain things we know we want to hit next season, and there are certain things where, if it’s the end versus if it’s just [another season], those things might be different. It’s not my decision to make. I don’t think we’ll know for a while, but I don’t think it will affect the first half of [Season 7]; I think it will play out the same either way. But as we get near the end, I think it will play out differently depending on whether this is, or is not the final season.”
On the other hand, with a show that has been averaging 9.3 million total viewers and a 0.9 demo rating (with Live+7 playback) it seems a high risk for CBS to suddenly drop the show. Moreover, another factor that could determine the outcome is a potential writers’ strike as it happened during the freshman season of Big Bang, resulting in Holland foreseeing a scenario where an eighth season is necessary to bring the spinoff to a satisfactory close.
“That’s certainly another thing that throws a wrench into it — if [a strike] happens, how long it goes on, and how many episodes this next season will end up being,” he explains. He further added, quote, “Those are questions we can’t even answer; we’d just be speculating. So we certainly have a plan in place of where we’re aiming [to get] next season with some understanding, and some flexibility, that this may or may not be the end.”
Only time will tell what the future holds for this beloved series, but we have hoped that it should certainly get renewed for an eighth season to bring the story to a satisfactory end with respect to the many character arcs if it isn’t able to get a higher episode count for its upcoming seventh season.
In the meantime, we recommend that the readers should stream the show while it lasts!
Young Sheldon Season 6 is currently also available to stream on HBO Max and FuboTV, which is ideal for international viewers, apart from CBS and Paramount Plus.
