David and Victoria Beckham, a renowned power couple since they started dating in 1997 and married for over two decades, have enjoyed an iconic status in the media.
However, their relationship endured intense scrutiny during a brief 2003 cheating scandal, which they both denied. In their new Netflix documentary, ‘Beckham,’ the celebrity couple provides an intimate look at the challenges they faced during that tumultuous period without delving into the specifics.

‘It was the hardest period for us’
In a candid and intimate interview featured in the documentary, Victoria revealed that the aftermath of an alleged affair by David was the most challenging period in their marriage. Expressing her feelings about that time after the scandal came to the public’s attention, Victoria said, “It was the hardest period for us because it felt like the world was against us.”
She continued, “Here’s the thing – we were against each other if I’m completely honest.”
‘It was a nightmare’
In the documentary, released on Wednesday, Victoria talked about the public attention and invasive media scrutiny that followed their family all the way to Spain, where they moved to be with David. “It was a nightmare. From the minute we opened, the press were there in cars and everywhere we went, we were followed,” she recounted.
“It was an absolute circus – it’s really entertaining when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it,” she added. Speaking of if she felt any resentment towards her husband during that hard time, Victoria confessed, “If I’m being totally honest, yes, I did. It was probably, if I’m being honest, the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life.”
“An Affair with Becks”
In an episode titled What Makes David Run, the 48-year-old professional footballer opened up about the pressure he and his family faced due to the rumour about his alleged affair.
“There were some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with,” he said of the newspaper headlines, including “An Affair with Becks” and “Sex with Becks.” David added, “It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage. I think we both felt at the time that we were, not losing each other, but drowning.”
Despite the hardships, David and Victoria have remained to be a power couple, tackling all the tough times together. “I don’t know how we got through it, in all honesty,” he said.
