The FBI has returned several high-value items stolen from Keanu Reeves’ Los Angeles home after a jewelry heist in 2023. Among the recovered belongings were six watches, including a Rolex worn by Reeves during his portrayal of John Wick in the action film series. The return of the property prompted Reeves, 61, to express his gratitude in a handwritten letter to the agency.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, November 18, the FBI confirmed that the items had been safely returned to the actor. The agency also shared how Reeves chose to acknowledge their efforts. He wrote, “It is with profound gratitude and appreciation that I am writing this letter,” and later concluded, “Thank you so much for all your effort, dedication, professionalism and cross border cooperation. My warmest regards, Keanu.”
Reeves also acknowledged the agencies involved in solving the case and restoring his belongings. He thanked “the LAPD, the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, the FBI’s Legal Attaché Office in Santiago, Chile, Policia de Investigaciones (PDI), and Fiscalìa de Chile (Chilean National Prosecutor’s Office).”
The “cross border” cooperation mentioned in his note refers to the role played by Chilean authorities, who located the stolen items in Chile. Officials there stated in July that they would be turning over the property to the FBI. In August, Reeves met with FBI personnel and a Chilean PDI Officer in New York to discuss the logistics surrounding the recovery and return of the watches.
The FBI’s efforts bring an end to an investigation that stretched close to two years. According to Marcelo Varas, a police officer with Chile’s robbery investigation squad, the stolen watches carried a combined value of $125,000. The engraved Rolex Submariner associated with the John Wick franchise was valued at $9,500. That particular watch gained additional attention because it had appeared on screen with Reeves.
Reports of the stolen watches resurfacing first emerged in December 2024, when CNN disclosed that the items had been found in Chile. Authorities arrested an individual believed to be connected to a series of violent robberies. It has not yet been determined whether that person directly participated in the burglary at Reeves’ residence.
In the FBI’s announcement, Los Angeles Police Department Chief of Police Jim McDonnell addressed the collaborative recovery process and the broader implications of the case. “This case underscores how crime today knows no borders, and how vital our international partnerships are in bringing justice to victims here in Los Angeles,” he said.
McDonnell also emphasized the message the case sends to criminal groups. “The recovery of these stolen items thanks to the outstanding collaboration between the Policia de Investigaciones de Chile, the FBI, and our detectives sends a strong message that organized theft groups will be pursued wherever they operate. I am proud of the work our team has done alongside our federal and international partners to hold these criminal networks accountable.”
