Kim Kardashian’s return to Paris earlier this year brought renewed attention to the violent 2016 robbery that left her fearing for her life and permanently altered her sense of safety.
Her experience took center stage again on the December 4 episode of The Kardashians, which documented the days leading up to her court testimony in France.
Ten individuals were facing charges connected to the theft of more than 10 million dollars worth of jewelry from her hotel room at the No Address Hotel in October 2016.
The episode opened with new insight into the immediate aftermath of the attack. Kim’s longtime friend Simone Harouche, who was staying directly below her at the time and overheard the intrusion, traveled to Paris to testify as well.
While reflecting on the moments after the robbers fled, Harouche recalled the drastic escape plan that Kim had laid out if the men returned.
“You opened the window, and you were like, ‘If they come back, we are jumping out the window,’” Harouche recounted.
The panic of the moment also resurfaced for Kris Jenner. During filming, she reflected on receiving a frantic call from her daughter in which Kim was, in Jenner’s words, prepared to leap from the building if the masked intruders reentered the room.
Kim confirmed that she was willing to take whatever action felt necessary during those terrifying seconds. In her words, “I was down for anything.”
Harouche later expanded on the terrifying choice the two were considering. In a confessional interview, she reflected, “That’s how scary it was, that that was the option for safety, jumping out of a window and breaking our bodies.”
As the episode shifted to Kim’s preparations for court, the series showed her making a choice that directly confronted the trauma of that night.
She discussed whether to walk into the courthouse wearing a 22-carat replacement for the ring that had been stolen during the robbery. The idea began as a half-joking question, but it took on meaning as she considered the symbolism.
“Should I wear the ring that they stole from me that I ended up replacing? Twenty two carats, baby,” she teased before deciding it represented a message to those involved in the crime.
Once she settled on wearing it, she explained the reasoning behind the decision. “They are not gonna take my power. I want to be who I want to be, and I feel like they took that away from me for so long.”
Kim also reflected on how dramatically her relationship with jewelry changed after the robbery. In a confessional segment, she stated, “For years, I did not wear diamonds. It changed the way that I operate in my home, what I keep in my home.”
She also described wanting to reclaim control over how she presents herself. “I want to taunt the f— out of these losers. I wanna wear whatever the f— I wanna wear, if I wanna wear it.”
Following her testimony, eight of the ten defendants were convicted. In a statement to PEOPLE, Kim expressed appreciation for the outcome.
She said she was “deeply grateful to the French authorities for pursuing justice in this case.”
Her statement continued with a direct acknowledgment of the lasting emotional impact. “The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family.”
Kim also underscored her hope for accountability and continued healing. “While I will never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all. I remain committed to advocating for justice, and promoting a fair legal system.”
