LaKeith Stanfield is opening up about one of the most profound experiences of his life, witnessing the birth of his child with wife Kasmere Trice Stanfield. The Judas and the Black Messiah actor spoke about the moment during the New York premiere of Die My Love on Saturday, November 1, at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater.
Stanfield, 34, told Entertainment Tonight that being present for the birth was an unforgettable experience. “It was the craziest, beautiful, powerful, amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” he said. The actor revealed that he not only supported his wife throughout labor but also documented the special moment. “And I had a camera,” he added with a smile, explaining that he took photos while Kasmere was giving birth and even held up her leg during the delivery.
Describing the experience further, Stanfield said, “As a man, all you want to do is help and bear witness.” He reflected on the emotional impact of seeing childbirth firsthand, adding, “And I feel like, coming out of this movie, we’re reminded how important women are, how important they are to the entirety of creation in the world.”
LaKeith and Kasmere confirmed to PEOPLE in July 2023 that they had secretly married and welcomed their first child together. At the time, they shared that they made a conscious choice to keep details about their baby private. “We decided early on we wanted to protect our baby as much as we can for as long as possible,” Kasmere said, explaining why they have chosen not to reveal their child’s name or sex.
Stanfield, who is also the father of two daughters from previous relationships, has spoken in the past about how fatherhood has reshaped his perspective on life. In the same PEOPLE interview, he expressed that becoming a parent brought a new sense of purpose and emotional depth. “I’m truly concerned about their wellbeing and that I want them to do well, to be well, to feel well in the world, and that’s a unique thing,” he said.
Reflecting on his own upbringing, the Atlanta star acknowledged that he did not always have a dependable father figure growing up. “I know for me growing up, I didn’t always feel like I had that. I didn’t really have a figure that was a male that was in my life that I felt I could depend on and count on,” he said. That experience, he noted, has influenced the way he approaches parenthood and motivates him to be a present, reliable father for his children.
Stanfield added that the “connection with my kids is something unlike any I’ve ever had in my life.” His comments underscore how deeply he values his role as a parent and how witnessing the birth of his youngest child has only strengthened that bond.
The actor, known for his versatility across projects such as Sorry to Bother You, The Harder They Fall, and Knives Out, has balanced a growing career with family life. His latest film, Die My Love, in which he stars alongside director Lynne Ramsay, continues to showcase his range as a performer while also reflecting his evolving perspective on relationships and family.
During his red carpet appearance, Stanfield expressed admiration and gratitude for his wife, praising her strength during childbirth and the way she has embraced motherhood. The actor’s candid reflections offered a rare glimpse into his private life, one that he and Kasmere have intentionally kept out of the public eye.
As Stanfield continues to take on new professional roles, his comments about family suggest that his greatest source of inspiration lies at home. For the actor, watching his wife bring new life into the world was not just a personal milestone but also a reminder of what he values most.
“It was amazing,” he said simply, a moment of awe that continues to shape how he sees both his family and himself.
