Law & Order Season 23 Renewal Status
The show has been officially greenlit for a 23rd season by NBC, which was confirmed back on April 2023, along with the sibling series Law & Order: SVU, and Law & Order: Organized Crime, and it is not surprising that the renewal has been approved as the entire Law & Order franchise continues to do well with viewers and has also received favorable reviews from critics around the globe.
At some point in time, the series has been able to rank among the top 10 broadcast dramas of the TV season in the demo, according to L+7 data. NBC says that SVU is the network’s top show for the season across all platforms after 35 days of delayed viewing. With strong performances on NBC, streaming, in syndication, and internationally, the drama has been a moneymaker for the company.
“I’m pleased to continue my four-decade relationship with Universal Television and NBC,” Dick Wolf said in a statement of his own. Further adding, “All six shows being picked up again is the ultimate accolade to our incredible casts, producers, and writers. I’d also like to thank our loyal fans who have kept our NBC shows on the air for what will be a cumulative 84 seasons.”
Moreover, the official Twitter handle of the show also confirmed the renewal with the early pick-up of Dick Wolf’s One Chicago franchise.

Law & Order Season 23 Release Date and Time Slot
The exact premiere date has yet to be acknowledged, as the series was renewed a few weeks ago and the finale episode, “Open Wounds,” of the 22nd season premiered a few days ago, which is way too early for the network to confirm any details. On the bright side, the release window of Law & Order Season 23 is confirmed to be for the 2023–24 broadcast season for the NBC network.
In order to maintain consistency, a similar month gap can be expected, as the season will be confirmed to premiere in the fall of 2023.
The ideal release window will be sometime around September, and it is expected to premiere every Thursday night’s starting at 8/7c on NBC, just like other original series. The official Twitter handle of the show also confirmed the release window, quoting, “Thanks for joining us for an exceptional season finale! #LawAndOrder and #SVU return Thursdays this fall and #OrganizedCrime returns in 2024 only on @nbc and streaming on @peacock.”

Law & Order Season 23 Plot
Though it is far too early to predict future storylines, the new season is likely to maintain the show’s core, which elaborates on the lives hang in the balance as detectives and prosecutors pursue justice in New York City. In cases ripped from the headlines, police investigate serious and often deadly crimes, weighing the evidence and questioning the suspects until someone is taken into custody.
As the district attorney’s office then builds a case to convict the perpetrator by proving the person guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Working together, these expert teams navigate all sides of the complex criminal justice system to make New York a safer place – and keep the worst offenders off the streets.
The next season is also expected to pick up from the 22nd season’s finale, in which the viewers got to see that a senator is gunned down at his daughter’s wedding. McCoy pushes for a severe sentence and squares up against a formidable DA – his own daughter. Later, Price aims to stay neutral but can’t help but empathize with the defendant over shared trauma.
