All that we can say right now is Law & Order season 23 is coming to NBC soon, and the viewers will soon get to see what happens to Shaw, Cosgrove, Dixon and the entire NYPD team. Created by Dick Wolf and produced by Wolf Entertainment, Law & Order is the foundation of all the other interconnected franchise series that feature the first half of each episode with the police officers solving a case and the second half that takes place in the courtrooms.
Last year, on September 28, 2021, the show was revived for the 21st season. The new season premiered on February 24, 2022. Featuring the regular cast members in the new season, Sam Waterston and Anthony Anderson, who played the roles of D.A. Jack McCoy and Detective Kevin Bernard. In an interesting turn of events, the series was also renewed for its 22nd season on May 10, 2022.
However, shortly after renewing the series for its 22nd season in May, it was announced that the veteran Anthony Anderson had bid his final adieu to the show and would not be coming back as Detective Kevin Bernard for Season 22. He will be replaced by Mehcad Brooks, who will be playing as a new detective in the upcoming season.
Here’s everything we know so far about Law & Order season 23.
When will Law & Order season 23 premiere?
Unfortunately, the recent update shared by NBC regarding the Law & Order season 23 premiere won’t favor the fans’ wishes. It is confirmed that season 23 has been delayed, and it won’t be a part of NBC’s fall 2023 lineup. This delay is primarily caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have not only affected OTT entertainment but also broadcast channels like NBC, thereby affecting the release schedules of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Law & Order: Organized Crime.
This is not it, guys. Reports suggest that Law & Order season 23 might constitute half the total episodes when it premieres. Considering that the strikes are still ongoing, we can only expect season 23 to premiere in late 2024.
When was Law & Order renewed for season 23?
Law & Order was confirmed for a 23rd season by NBC on April 10, 2023. As mentioned previously, the show returned after a 12-year hiatus from television. Along with the announcement, Dick Wolfe also expressed his happiness to continue his four-decade-long relationship with NBC.
“All [the Law & Order and One Chicago shows] shows being picked up again is the ultimate accolade to our incredible casts, producers and writers. I’d also like to thank our loyal fans who have kept our NBC shows on the air for what will be a cumulative 84 seasons.” (via NBC Insider)
What can we expect to happen in Law & Order season 23?
Currently, no official synopsis has been released by NBC concerning Law & Order season 23. However, it is expected to stream 22 episodes in total. The previous season concluded with McCoy facing his daughter in a case. The 23rd season will presumably pick up from that.
Law & Order is set and filmed in New York City, with episodes being divided into two halves. The first half focuses on the investigation of the crime and unveiling the suspect, for which the New York City Police Department detectives are responsible.
Meanwhile, the second half magnifies the nitty-gritty of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the trial preparation of the prosecution of the defendant. Many don’t know this, but the cases are often inspired by real-life events that make it to the headlines in the newspaper. It ran non-stop for 20 seasons till May 24, 2010, before it was up for cancellation.
Who are the expected cast members of Law & Order season 23?
At the moment, no significant changes have been announced regarding the casting of season 23. The following litany of cast members is expected to reprise their respective roles:
- Jeffrey Donovan as Senior Detective Frank Cosgrove
- Mehcad Brooks as Junior Detective Jalen Shaw
- Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon
