For this week’s movie announcements, there is a special mention that has left many cinema lovers buzzing with anticipation into knowing what’s in store for the upcoming twisted romance film titled “Wicker,” which will be directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson (Save Yourselves!) from a script they adapted based on the short story The Wicker Husband by Ursula Wills-Jones.

After months of waiting for any additional news, the film has finally gained traction as new sources have revealed details on the main cast members, who will include:

Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Oscar nominee Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) have been confirmed to join the cast. Soon, they will ignite the silver screen with their unparalleled talent. With so many years of experience within the entertainment industry, these two incredibly talented actors have been renowned for their remarkable performances and undeniable screen presence.

This time around, with Black Bear launching for sales at next week’s AFM, it will be exciting to see them finally share the screen together.

This unexpected duo will undeniably bring the magic of their impressive performance, range, and ability to immerse themselves in diverse characters that promise to elevate this project to new heights of cinematic excellence, which will truly be a major topic of discussion among the cinephile community for many weeks to come.

Moreover, Colman, 49,  is all set to portray a smelly and ridiculed fisherwoman in a seaside village where fed up with small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker, who is played by Patel, 33.

The official synopsis of Wicker is described as follows: “On the outskirts of a village by the sea, lives a Fisherwoman (Olivia Colman); smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed. One day, fed up with her stuffy, small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker (Dev Patel). In an otherwise conservative town, this unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.”

In addition to this, the producer credits for the film will be shared by Colman, Ed Sinclair, and Tom Carver from South of the River, David Michod and Brad Zimmerman for Yoki, and Justin Lothrop and Brent Stiefel for Votiv, which originated and financed the film’s development. As stated above, Black Bear Pictures will open international sales for Wicker in the American Film Market, while CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group will handle sales on U.S. rights.

More details will be disclosed later as the project isn’t currently a SAG production.

The movie is being financed and produced by Topic Studios and Tango, and the various upcoming projects from the studios include the following: David Lowery’s pop music melodrama Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, in partnership with A24. This year, Tango premiered His Three Daughters, Azazel Jacob’s film, at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and is also in post on Spaceman, a film directed by Johan Renck based on the 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, and starring  Adam Sandler. It is scheduled to be released by Netflix in 2024.

We would also like to emphasize that the official release date of Wicker has not been confirmed because the cameras aren’t set to start rolling anytime soon, as production will commence sometime around mid-late 2024 in Europe.

At last, for this year’s scheduled movie releases, Colman will be seen as Mrs. Scrubbit in the upcoming 2023 musical fantasy film, “Wonka,” directed by Paul King, which is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on December 8, 2023, and in the United States on December 15, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Patel will soon be seen in an upcoming action thriller film, “Monkey Man,” which was written by Paul Angunawela and John Collee and directed by Dev Patel in his directorial debut, who also serves as co-writer. No official release date has been confirmed; however, it is expected to be released on Netflix.
