Hulu’s Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated comedy series, Only Murders in the Building, has compelled people to glue themselves on the couches and unravel the maelstrom that culminates into comic relief. It’s almost been a year since its second season premiered, and it seems to us that the third season is taking forever to climb onto our screens. Indubitably considered a network favorite, Craig Erwich, President of Hulu Originals, said in a statement about Only Murders in the Building:
“Only Murders in the Building is the true crown jewel of our slate. Its appeal across generations, the intersection of humor and heart, and its truly original approach are a hallmark of and testament to [executive producers] Dan [Fogelman], John [Hoffman], Steve [Martin], Marty [Short] and Selena [Gomez’s] work. We are grateful to be able to continue telling the stories of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel to viewers that have consistently shown us they crave more of this story.”
If the show has amassed such popularity, a third season renewal is a no-brainer (Renewed on July 11, just after season 2 premiered). It seems that luck is in our favor because the trailer of this “true crown jewel” of the comedy series has just been released.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the same.
Is the trailer of Only Murders in the Building Season 3 released?
The trailer for Only Murders in the Building season 3 has just been released, and we could see Steve Martin’s Charles, Martin Short’s Oliver, and Selena Gomez’s Mabel entangled in a murder mystery that occurred backstage of Oliver’s Broadway show. And guess who is the victim? It’s none other than our very own Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd, who plays Ben Glenroy in the show.
Slightly hinting towards the metafiction of this show, Gomez can be heard saying to Short in the footage shared on Wednesday, “Finding this killer is the only way you’ll have a show.”
Like its first two predecessors, the triumvirate sweats off to unravel the clues and suspects. But this time, their prime suspect is Glenroy’s co-star Loretta Durkin (Meryl Streep). Talking to The Wrap, Selena Gomez unboxed her gushy feelings about working with Streep, expressing:
“Working with her, for any actor I would assume, it takes your breath away to be around someone who is a part of history, who has paved the way for so many actresses and told so many powerful stories and is recognized for that. And she couldn’t have been more humble, more nice, more, just, adorable. I don’t know how to explain it. She was so sweet to everyone and on time and never looked at her script. It was really inspiring.”
In the trailer, as you can see, the roles of Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams and Emily in Paris’ Ashley Park are minutely underscored. Per Deadline, Williams will play a documentarian who finds the case of Mabel, Charles, and Oliver intriguing.
Not only that but Meryl Streep is seen giving a dramatic reading to the script as she says, “Theatre is all about choices”, towards the end of the trailer. “What you share and what you hide – those choices change everything.”
However, this Martin and John Hoffman-created comedy series, on the arrival of its third season, won’t feature a major character. Any guesses who is it?
Only Murders in the Building season 3: Nathan Lane is out!
Yes, you read it right. We can officially scratch Teddy Dimas’ name from the list of prime suspects in Ben Glenroy’s murder. Dimas’ recurring character was reprised by Nathan Lane in seasons 1 and 2. For the third, Lane will not reportedly appear at all. Per Deadline, the reason for his exit comes in the wake of Lane’s recent run in the Broadway play Pictures From Home.
The testament to Lane’s phenomenal talent is his first Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series following season 1 and his nomination for his work in season 2. In these two seasons, Lane appeared as a foil to Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam.
Who are the other cast members of Only Murders in the Building season 3?
The building and the murders seem empty without our official triumvirate, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, who will return to reprise their roles as Charles, Oliver, and Mabel for the third season, respectively.
The rest of the cast is yet to be announced. However, we presume the following cast members to reprise their roles in season 3:
- Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Detective Williams
- Ryan Broussard as Will Putnam
- Zoe Colletti as Lucy
- Tina Fey as Cinda Canning
- Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard
- Nathan Lane as Teddy Dimas
- James Caverly as Theo Dimas
- Paul Rudd as Ben Glenroy
In a conversation with Variety, co-creator John Hoffman said, “Paul Rudd, after making an auspicious entrance into the world of our show at the end of Season 2 as Ben Glenroy, is someone we clearly want to know more about and see in our upcoming Season 3 — as he is a clear source of many upcoming questions and, as ever with our show, many twists yet to come!”
What can we expect to happen in Only Murders in the Building season 3?
*Spoiler alert*
Season three will indubitably pick up from where its predecessor left off. In the second season finale, a one-year time lapse is showcased, featuring an opening night of a Broadway production that Oliver is directing. Ben Glenroy (Rudd) and Charles are the stars of the show, but they apparently have a rift between them. This is realized when Charles tells Ben to “stay away from here” (the mystery lady is still under wraps) and “I know what you did.” When the curtains open, the drama happens. But this is a different drama in that Ben collapses on stage and is declared dead.
In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the executive producer of the series, Dan Fogelman, said, “It’s going to be a big season, and I think people are going to love Paul.”
Not only that, but Hoffman also pointed out that the third season will underscore Oliver’s life while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter.
“If season one was a little more focused on the emotional storyline for Mabel and Tim Kono, and season two was a little more emotionally connected to Charles and his relationship with his father and himself, I’m very excited to both lean into the theatrical side of New York City and also into Oliver and his world.”
Speaking to The Wrap, Gomez expressed her thoughts about being the executive producer of the show and how it catalyzed her character formation.
“Being an executive producer on this was a lovely surprise,” she said. “Because from the beginning, they were open to the idea of me being a part of creating Mabel… How would I dress? How would I say that? And now, being a part of it, I’m able to say, ‘I don’t feel like that sounds OK.’ Even down to certain scenes. There was one where I thought it was just a little off. Like, we should do something different. Let’s try to make it funnier, let’s try to make it smarter. So I get to do things like that.”
She further added, “I trust these people as much as I possibly can, because look at what they’ve created. You don’t want to mess up a perfect recipe, honestly.”
Will there be Only Murders in the Building season 4?
At the time of writing this article, Only Murders in the Building has not been renewed for a fourth season. However, we do contend a strong predilection for it to concretize owing to its exponential viewership and critical acclaim.
Although showrunner John Hoffman has not explicitly commented upon the longevity of the show, he did indulge to an extent to reveal that season 2 could be pivotal for the series’ future. In conversation with ELLE, he said, “I think there’s something in there that might help us expand the show, maybe beyond the building, in future seasons.”
When will Only Murders in the Building season 3 premiere?
Per Hulu’s announcement, the latest installment of Only Murders in the Building will premiere on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. Although the wait seems to be slightly longer than the last season, which dropped on Hulu on June 28, we contend that it’s worth it. What do you think?
