Outer Banks Season 4 Release Date: When is it expected to return on Netflix?

If you recall, earlier this year, on February 20, 2023, ahead of the third season premiere, the series was renewed for a fourth season, which has anticipated the fans knowing what the potential release date might be! As a result, die-hard fans have been speculating whether the fourth season is going to be a part of the 2023–24 fall streaming season on Netflix or not. If you are wondering the same, then we can assure you that, as of writing this, no official release date for Outer Banks Season 4 has been confirmed, so the chances of it premiering this year, let alone in September 2023, are far too early to happen.

We know that this update is a bit disheartening, but we have to inform our beloved readers exactly about what is happening behind the scenes when it comes to the production of the much-awaited fourth season! According to many reports, the principal photography allegedly began in June 2023, as the cast and crew were apparently seen on set in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 12, 2023, which is when the cameras are said to have started rolling. This is pretty much confirmation that production has officially started. As TUDUM also reported, the Outer Banks creators and writers were in the middle of writing the fourth season when season 3 premiered.

These developments were the icing on the cake, but regrettably, uncertain news overshadowed the filming which was proceeding as per the planned schedule. Right now, the show is no longer filming because of the ongoing dual strike, which includes the 2023 WGA strike and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which are far from over as they haven’t reached any agreement and are expected to last until October 2023. Due to this, Outer Banks Season 4 will not resume production until a resolution is offered to the parties involved. The cast members of Outer Banks are part of SAG, which means they’re not working until the AMPTP offers the actors’ union a new deal.

As a result, we speculate that the show will not premiere anytime soon or in the coming months of 2023. One of the other reasons is that the production stage alone will take a long time to fully complete, which will later be followed by the post-production period, which will probably take roughly eight months, assuming that filming might eventually start by late 2023 once the strikes reach an agreement for Netflix to set the potential release window of sometime around 2024 or even 2025 on Netflix only if the strikes gain more momentum and the production gets delayed further! Hence, we’ll just ask the fans to be patient and keep their fingers crossed for the best outcome.

At last, in order to receive updates, interested viewers can also enable notifications on Netflix. In the meantime, check out the official renewal announcement as shared on Netflix’s Twitter handle below:

Outer Banks Season 4 Plot: What to expect from the new season?

Although the cast has not announced the official filming of the show, it appears like the next part of #P4L will be way more exciting, beginning with the hunt for Blackbeard’s gold on the horizon, and the Outer Banks cast is more than ready for it! The cast has already returned to Kildare Island, as seen in the newly released sneak peek clip from Netflix’s Tudum’s Global Event 2023, which completely highlights that this season follows the legend of Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, who was an English pirate that operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain’s North American colonies.

“Seeing Poguelandia come to life was nothing short of spectacular. The Pogues are enjoying the adventure of a lifetime, and we now get to map out more twists and turns as the joyride continues into season four of Outer Banks. Thank you to Netflix, our cast, and the amazing fans who helped to make this happen,” said co-creators, showrunners, and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke at the Saturday celebration during the Poguelandia Fan Event in Huntington Beach, California.

The next season will also pick up elements from the final episode,Secret of the Gnomon,” of the third season, in which the viewers got to see that it’s been 18 months since they discovered the gold in El Dorado, where they’re still reeling from the deaths of Ward and Big John. Co-creator Shannon Burke previously told Tudum, “They couldn’t completely lose the third season,” Added co-creator Josh Pate, “We knew we needed to give them a win, but it ended up being a complicated one. We wanted the audience to feel that they had accomplished something and that it wasn’t all for nothing.”

Lastly, the creators have also said that they’re planning on filling in some more of the gaps within that 18-month time frame when Season 4 returns, which is crucial for the series to maintain continuity and not confuse the audience by letting them know that the Pogues “need to slow down and let all the ripples wash through” of the trauma they’ve endured, said Pate. Stokes agreed, noting how, after his dad’s death, John B is “just broken.”

“I would like to think that there’s going to be quite a bit of hesitation of jumping back into a world where they’ve lost a lot collectively,” Stokes told TV Guide back in February 2023. Further adding, “I think there’s now this newfound trust in one another to make the decision collectively and not just as a singular individual, and that goes for the entirety of the Pogues.”

Outer Banks Season 4 Cast: Who will reprise their roles?

The main cast members from the third season are expected to return in the next chapter are as follows: Chase Stokes as John B. Routledge, Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward, Carlacia Grant as Cleo, Rudy Pankow as JJ Maybank, Madison Bailey as Kiara Carrera, Drew Starkey as Rafe Cameron, and Austin North as Topper Thornton. On the other hand, there can be some additions to the fourth season’s cast! Yes, you read it right! Previously, co-creator Josh Pate teased that the upcoming season will feature several flashbacks to fill in the gaps with the 18-month time jump.

“We felt like we needed to migrate them out of school,” he told Netflix Tudum. Further adding, “We think about the first three [seasons] as a trilogy and then we’re starting over on [another sort of] trilogy now. We just needed to clear the decks. We’re going to have new villains, a new treasure hunt, a new life situation.” This comment has left the fans optimistic that new characters can be the new villains in the story that will be introduced in the next season.

We’ll just have to be patient until they are officially released! We shouldn’t anticipate Charles Esten as Ward Cameron or Charles Halford as Big John to make a comeback, given what transpires in the third season’s finale. A couple of these cast members could also make a comeback in season 4. However, they only had minor roles: David Jensen as Wes Genrette,  Julia Antonelli as Wheezie Cameron, and Caroline Arapoglou as Rose Cameron. Moreover, co-creators/showrunners/executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke are set to return for Outer Banks Season 4.

Outer Banks Season 4 Official Episode Count: How many will be there, and where to stream?

The next season is anticipated to include at least 10 episodes with an average length of 42–79 minutes. On the other hand, the episode titles and synopsis of the series have not been released in order to avoid early spoilers! All these details will be published once the episodes are due to air on the streaming service. So, we would advise fans to be patient while waiting for these updates, which will be issued in the coming days, and binge-watch the prior episodes to recall the events.

When Outer Banks Season 4 draws close to its release date, the series, along with previous seasons, will be available exclusively on Netflix, with other series of the same genre also accessible on the streaming platform. The video quality and the number of screens you can use to stream Netflix simultaneously depend on the package you choose. The basic membership starts at $9.99/month, and the standard membership starts at $15.49/month at no additional cost with any of their services.

Outer Banks Season 4 Official Teaser Trailer: Has it been released?

Unfortunately, the network has not released any new teasers or trailers for the upcoming season, as production has yet to begin. In the meantime, check out the official trailer of Outer Banks Season 3, in which the viewers get to see that the third season picks up with the Pogues as they’re washed ashore on a desert island that, for a brief moment, seems like an idyllic home, after they’ve found (and lost) a golden treasure and fled their hometown.

It is officially deemed “Poguelandia,” the island’s newest residents spend their days fishing, swimming, and reveling in the carefree lifestyle of their temporary dwelling. But things quickly go south for John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and Cleo when they find themselves once again caught up in a race for the treasure, quite literally running for their lives.

They’re broke and far from home, they can’t trust anyone, Ward and Rafe are hungry for revenge, and there’s a ruthless Caribbean Don who will stop at nothing to find the bounty. Was the treasure ever within their reach? Or was it all a trap to stop them once and for all? Either way, it’s the Pogues against the world – and the only way out is together. On Rotten Tomatoes, the third season holds an approval rating of 50% based on 8 reviews, with an average rating of 4.1/10.
