It’s going to be a gathering of beloved characters as Outlander Season 7 is bringing back six major characters from past seasons of the hit Starz show, including Graham McTavish’s Dougal MacKenzie. As reported by Deadline, some favorites from previous seasons will return in the much-awaited seventh season of the Starz drama, which is currently filming in Scotland.
Graham McTavish – who’s on HBO’s House of the Dragon, will reprise his role as Jamie’s uncle Dougal MacKenzie. Also returning is Nell Hudson as Laoghaire Fraser; Steven Cree as Old Ian Murray; Andrew Whipp as Brian Fraser, Jamie’s father; Layla Burns as Joan MacKimmie, Marsali’s sister and Jamie’s stepdaughter; and Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan, Claire’s former friend-turned-enemy and a fellow time traveler.

There are several new actors will be joining the cast too, including Gloria Obianyo (Dune) as Mercy Woodcock, a free Black woman navigating the hardships of life in Colonial America; Rod Hallett (The Last Kingdom) as Benedict Arnold, the notorious Revolutionary soldier, turned traitor; Chris Fulton (Bridgerton) as Rob Cameron, a new acquaintance of Roger and Brianna; Diarmaid Murtagh (Vikings) as Buck MacKenzie, the illegitimate son of Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan, and Roger’s ancestor, a role previously played by Graham McTavish in season five, and Kristin Atherton (Shakespeare & Hathaway) as Jenny Murray, Jamie’s sister, and Young Ian’s mother, a role originated by Laura Donnelly in seasons one through three.
Moreover, previously announced additions include Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom. Executive producer Maril Davis added, “The character of William Ransom is a wonderful role, and one fan has been eager to see it. Finding someone with the talent and physicality to play Jamie’s son was a daunting task, but Charles’ charisma was evident during the audition process and we are excited to see what he will bring to William’s multi-layered journey.”
The other members are Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel Hunter and Joey Phillips as Denzell Hunter. “One of the many joys of our epic story is the element of time travel which allows us to revisit some of our favorite characters in different times and places, and we’re thrilled to welcome back so many familiar faces for season seven,” said Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner, writer and executive producer, in a statement.
The official Twitter handle of the show also confirmed the news by sharing a post, quoting, “Meet the fabulous pair playing the Hunters: @Izzy_Meikle and @joeyphillips92! #Outlander” Take a look at the post below:

The pair will play brother and sister in the series. Rachel and Denzell are Quakers whose quiet country life is changed when Young Ian arrives at their farm with a sick and injured William Ransom. “We’re excited to welcome Izzy and Joey to the Outlander family and can’t wait for fans to see how these two fantastic actors bring Rachel and Denzell to life,” Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner, writer, and executive producer, said in an exclusive statement to Deadline.
Further adding, “In addition to our returning cast, we’re also excited to welcome several new actors to the Outlander family and cannot wait to introduce them to fans in our extended season.” Roberts, along with Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Luke Schelhaas, Andy Harries, Jim Kohlberg, Caitríona Balfe, and Sam Heughan, serve as executive producers on Outlander, which is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Left Bank Pictures, and Story Mining & Supply Company, in association with Sony Pictures Television.
When is Outlander Season 7 releasing on Starz?
Unfortunately, the release date of Outlander Season 7 is presently uncertain, but this is most likely due to the seventh season still being in the development stage, which will take time to complete thoroughly and provide the ideal content for fans. As previously stated, the new season is being shot in Scotland, which serves as a stand-in for North Carolina.
In the meantime, take a look at the official post, which shows a sneak peek from the set of Season 7 on the official Twitter handle of the show, quoting, “It wouldn’t be #WorldOutlanderDay without an #Outlander gift, now would it? The 7th season will be based on the book called “Echo in the Bone.” Roberts said, “We can’t wait to get into the writer’s room and start breaking Echo in the Bone and look forward to giving the fans another season of this exhilarating story.” Additionally, Diana Gabaldon’s website offers the following description of the story:
Set in America, London, Canada, and Scotland. The book’s cover image reflects the internal shape of the novel: a caltrop. That’s an ancient military weapon that looks like a child’s jack with sharp points; the Romans used them to deter elephants, and the Highway Patrol still uses them to stop fleeing perps in cars. This book has four major storylines: Jamie and Claire, Roger and Brianna (and family), Lord John and William, and Young Ian, all intersecting in the nexus of the American Revolution—and all of them with sharp points. (1777-1778/1972)
