Those who know, know that Claire is to Jamie what Rose was to Jack. Not a modern-day Titanic, of course, but Outlander is one series that has always left viewers with cliffhangers, just like Game of Thrones. Even with the series reaching the Season 7 finale, a lot of questions still remain unanswered. Perhaps for the best, as it simply means another season of Outlander.

The good part is that it won’t take too long for the questions to be answered, as the new season is coming back in 2026, as announced by Starz. But the harsh reality is that it’s going to be the final season of the show.

Interestingly, while the TV show will end with the 8th season once and for all, the original book by Diana Gabaldon will continue further with the story. So, the audience has to wait for the upcoming episodes of Outlander season 8 to air and understand the climax accordingly.

When will Outlander season 8 premiere?

While an exact release date is yet to be announced, reports suggest that the Starz period drama will officially arrive in early 2026. The series will have 10 episodes, which have already finished filming, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Will the original cast be back in the final season?

For those who are wondering whether all characters will be back in season 8, there’s a slight catch. Kristin Atherton, who plays the role of Jennie Fraser Murray, will not be seen in the final season. According to the showrunners, her character isn’t coming back as she had rejected Jamie’s invitation to North Carolina in the season 7 finale. Moreover, Tobias Menzies will also be making an exit from the series. His dual characters, Frank Randall and Black Jack Randall, were killed off in earlier seasons.

The regular followers of the show will also know that his character hasn’t appeared since season 4.

The good part is that the core cast will be back in Outlander season 8, including Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser, Caitriona Balfe as Claire, and Sophie Skelton as Brianna Fraser Mackenzie, Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie, John Bell as Ian Fraser Murray, David Berry as Lord John Grey, Cesar Domboy as Fergus Fraser, Lauren Lyle as Marsali MacKimmie, and Paul Gorman as twins Keziah and Josiah Beardsley.

A report by Just Jared stated that Gary Lamont, Izzy Meikle-Small, Dairmaid Murtagh, Caitlin O’Ryan, Joey Phillips, and Charles Vandervaart will also be reprising their roles.

Meanwhile, three new characters will be joining the upcoming season, who are Kieran Bew as Charles Cunningham, retired British captain, Frances Tomelty as his mother, Elspeth Cunningham, and Carla Woodcock as Amaranthus Grey.

What next?

Outlander is almost like Game of Thrones when it comes to leaving people with cliffhangers by the end of all its seasons. The same happened with season 7, which suggested that Jamie and Claire’s daughter Faith had apparently survived despite her stillbirth in France. In fact, the official teaser of the show revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con 2025 also showed the couple walking into what looked like the symbol 8, implying the end of the story. Now, what happens to their daughter and whether they survive the American Revolutionary War will be apparently answered in the final season.

So, does the Fraser family live on?

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, who played the on-screen couple for almost a decade, have shared their thoughts regarding the same. In an interview with The New York Post, Heughan says that he and Caitriona will be in each other’s lives forever. Calling each other ‘firm friends,’ the actor continued, “I’m just so happy that she’s being really successful and continuing working on some great projects.”

Heughan also went on to reveal that the final season will still have a premiere and that the cast will reunite for a big celebration.

Sophie Skelton, who plays the role of Brianna in the series, has also promised that the final season is going to blow everyone’s minds. “She’s been through so much, but I think losing your child tops it all. She’s just been a bit of a hot mess this season, really. It’s just a horrific thing for her to be going through,” Skelton said.

She added, “She’s a tough nut to crack, but she’s an exceedingly loyal person. She defends other people better than she defends herself. And I think if you hurt somebody who is close to Brianna, that is actually the biggest pain that you can inflict on her.”

Sophie also said that she is proud of season 8 and that many people will find the answers that they were searching for in season 7.

Will Outlander Season 8 be based on a book?

The final season of the show will adapt Diana Gabaldon’s ninth novel, Go Tell the Bees That I am Gone, and will supposedly also include details from the tenth book titled A Blessing from a Warrior Going Out. While the 7th season was mostly set in the 1700s, it is yet to be seen what the final season’s backdrop will be, given that it will be the final showdown of the popular series.

Will season 8 of Outlander be on Netflix?

The final season of the Starz drama isn’t expected to drop on Netflix in the U.S. until mid-2028, as per Decider.
