Outlander Season 8 Renewal Status: When was it approved?
In January 2023, Outlander was renewed for a ten-episode eighth and final season, which isn’t surprising as this historical drama series has always been one of the best-performing shows for the Starz network. For context, with only a few episodes having been broadcast on the network, the seventh season has been getting amazing reception and viewership from audiences around the world. As per Rotten Tomatoes, the seventh season has a 100% rating with an average rating of 7.7/10 based on 6 reviews.
On Metacritic, it has received a score of 75 out of 100 based on 4 reviews, indicating “generally favorable reviews.” These ratings alone indicate that the show has a demand unlike any other shows that have become legacy shows for the network, so it is great to know that it was renewed rather earlier, even before the seventh season ended its entire run. Also, check out the official renewal post as shared on the official Starz Twitter handle, quoting, “What an incredible journey with an incredible fanbase. #Outlander has officially been renewed for an eighth and final season.”

Outlander Season 8 Release Date: When will the last season premiere?
The production of the final season is assumed to begin later this year in Scotland. So, there is clearly a lot of time left, as the series is still in its pre-production stage, which takes time to approve before the star cast and crew begin the shoot. Moreover, new updates about the series’ final season may also take more time to release since the ongoing writer strike, with the potential of the actor’s strike also happening, has been a major factor in causing delays for production houses across various networks.
Hence, there is a chance that the final season’s release may be postponed; if it ever happens, it will be officially confirmed later by the network. Until we receive any acknowledgment, we speculate that the final season might be aiming to be released before the end of 2024 or even the beginning of 2025, only if the strike concludes in the coming weeks!
As production will officially begin later this year after the break without causing any more delays. The other reason the final season’s premiere date is still TBA is that Outlander Season 7 is currently airing Part 1 on Starz, with Part 2 heading to air sometime around early 2024. So it makes sense that the final season will be released by the end of next year or even later. Hence, we’ll just have to wait, hope for the best, and see what happens! *Finger’s Crossed*
Outlander Season 8 Plot: What to expect from the final season?
The eighth season will consist of ten episodes, following an extended 16-episode Season 7, which began premiering a few days ago on June 16, 2023. This is one of the reasons why the network has restricted itself from releasing any information about the plotlines of the last season in order to avoid spoilers! The fans will have to wait for some time, maybe until the final episode of the new season airs, and then we’ll get some insight into the final chapter. For now, the viewers will just have to make assumptions about the conclusion of the show’s overall story and respective character arcs.
“For nearly a decade ‘Outlander’ has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz. Further adding, “But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore this dynamic world and its origin story. We’re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril, and Ronald and can’t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.”
Outlander Season 8 Cast: Who will reprise their roles?
There has been no official confirmation about the returning cast members, as we still have to wait for the seventh season to conclude in order to get some idea about which characters will have the potential to make a comeback in the show’s final season. Until then, the main characters from the seventh season are speculated to reprise their roles, which are as follows:
Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall Fraser, Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser, Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield, Sophie Skelton as Brianna Randall, John Bell as Young Ian Murray, David Berry as Lord John Grey, Caitlin O’Ryan as Lizzie Wemyss Beardsley, Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom, Maria Doyle Kennedy as Jocasta Cameron Innes, Mark Lewis Jones as Thomas Christie, Alexander Vlahos as Allan Christie, Paul Gorman as Josiah and Keziah Beardsley, and Andrew Adair and Matthew Adair as Jemmy MacKenzie.
Some of the crucial crew members include Roberts executive producers alongside series creators Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Luke Schelhaas, Andy Harries, Jim Kohlberg, Balfe, and Heughan. Moreover, Moore’s Tall Ship Productions, Left Bank Pictures, and Story Mining & Supply Company produce the series in association with Sony Pictures Television.
Outlander Season 8 Official Trailer: Is it available and where to watch?
All the prior seasons of Outlander are available exclusively on STARZ and the STARZ app, with new episodes most likely premiering on Friday nights, just like the prior seasons. Moreover, the previous seasons can currently be viewed on Amazon, the STARZ app, Netflix, and Hulu, depending on the region you live in and the membership plan you choose, so you can explore the vast catalog of the streaming service. It is internationally distributed by Sony Pictures Television.
Moreover, the network hasn’t released any new promotional stuff for the eighth and final season as the release date hasn’t been disclosed, and the filming hasn’t even begun as of writing this. Hence this leaves a lot of time for marketing to begin. We’ll have to wait for it for some time. Until then, the fans should check out the official seventh season trailer to know what the new season has in store for them, as the overall plot follows:
After the harrowing events of Season 6, Jamie and Young Ian race to rescue Claire before she’s tried and wrongfully convicted for the murder of Malva Christie, but their mission is complicated by the beginning of a geopolitical firestorm: The American Revolution has arrived. In the seventh season of Outlander, Jamie, Claire, and their family are caught in the violent birth pains of an emerging nation as armies march to war and British institutions crumble in the face of armed rebellion.
The land the Frasers call home is changing – and they must change with it. In order to protect what they’ve built, the Frasers have to navigate the perils of the Revolutionary War. They learn that sometimes to defend what you love, you have to leave it behind. As the conflict draws them out of North Carolina and into the heart of this fight for independence, Jamie, Claire, Brianna, and Roger are faced with impossible decisions that have the potential to tear their family apart.
Outlander: Is there a prequel in development?
Yes! A ten-episode first season of a prequel series titled, “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” has been in development since February 2022, and the show will focus on Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian and Ellen Fraser. “Outlander: Blood of My Blood is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain,” said Roberts.
Further adding, “The title is a nod to Jamie Fraser’s marriage vow to Claire and there will be several names and faces that Outlander fans will know and recognize. Jamie and Claire’s TV story may be coming to an end with season eight, but Diana is continuing on with their literary journey in her wonderful book series and is working diligently on book ten. With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the Outlander universe, and we cannot wait to continue sharing these stories with our dedicated fans.”
The #Outlander universe is expanding! Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel that will follow the love story of Jamie Fraser’s parents, is officially in development at STARZ.
