With the second season closing on an open-ended note, fans can’t wait to know the details regarding Prodigal Son Season 3.
Prodigal Son is a procedural drama that focuses on a talented young criminalist, Malcolm Bright. He is the son of one of the most feared serial killers called “The Surgeon”. Given his family’s history with killing, Malcolm knew how criminal minds work. He used his talent for the good and helped the police investigate and uncover multiple cases. While doing this, Malcolm doesn’t really have the best relationship with his family.
He and his mother are close to ending their relationship, his sister insists on Malcolm taking a break, and his father is trying hard to mend their relationship. Malcolm refuses to leave work as, according to him, that is the only thing keeping him sane and making him feel alive. While Malcolm got his father arrested for his crimes, Malcolm has to go back and investigate his father again as a copycat has emerged after years.
The show premiered on September 23, 2019, and the final episode of season 2 ended on May 18, 2021. For now, the series has a total of 2 seasons and 33 episodes.
Will there be a Season 3 of Prodigal Son?
Last we heard, FOX TV canceled the show in May 2022, leaving fans on a cliffhanger ending as far as the show is concerned. Thus there has been no formal announcement or update on the release date of Prodigal Son Season 3 so far. Given how many fans and viewers the show has accrued over the course of its two seasons, a third season may be ordered.
According to TVLine, actor Lou Diamond Phillips in an interview, revealed that the cast and crew were equally shocked to know the cancellation of Prodigal Son. “Ultimately, when [Fox] approved a cliffhanger at the end of Season 2, I thought there was no question. You don’t do that if you’re going to pull the plug,” he said. Phillips also added that if Season 3 had been on a roll, the program would have further explored a potential romance between Gil Arroyo and Jessica Whitly.
Even though Prodigal Son’s run ended abruptly months ago, the actor says he’s still “stung by it,” in part because he thought the thriller stood out as being “ridiculously special” in comparison to other recent TV programs. “I’m not denigrating any other shows, but there’s so much that’s run-of-the-mill and safe and middle-of-the-road on television,” Phillips continues. “For Prodigal Son to be as unique and different and exciting [as it was], and to have that cast — I just really feel as if this was a mistake.”
Prodigal Son Season 3 Cast
Shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine have been canceled due to being dropped by their broadcasting channel and then renewed by being picked up by another. Given the Prodigal Son’s wild success, we can hope something similar to happen to it. If it does, we would like to see the exceptional cast reprising its role.
Prodigal Son cast did a good job portraying their roles. The old cast may return in Season 3, along with a few fresh faces. Tom Payne will have to reprise his role as the main character of the series, Malcolm Bright. Lou Dimond Phillips should also return as Gil Arroyo, Lieutenant at NYPD, Halston Sage as Ainsley Whitley, Malcolm’s Sister, Aurora Perrineau as Daniel Powell, detective, Frank Harts as JT Tarmel, detective, Keiko Agena as Edrisa Tanaka, NYC Medical examiner, Michael Sheen as Martin Whitely, Malcolm’s father, and Bellamy Young as Jessica Whitly, Melcom’s mother.
The two seasons of this show have drawn a lot of interest from viewers. Additionally, based on the statements made by the show’s creators, we can anticipate learning shortly whether Prodigal Son Season 3 will be renewed and when it will premiere, if at all.
