The adrenaline-fueled reimagining of the 80s cult classic ‘Road House,’ starring Jake Gyllenhaal has made its mark on the global streaming charts with a whopping audience of 50 million viewers!

Within the first two weekends since Prime Video’s original movie, ‘Road House,’ was released, it has clinched the official title of “most-viewed original movie launch globally,” according to the streamer. The action film, directed by Doug Liman from a screenplay by Anthony Bagarozzi, Chuck Mondry, and David Lee Henry follows ex-UFC fighter Dalton, played by Gyllenhaal, as he takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover that this paradise is not all it seems.

The 121-minute feature, a remake of the 1989 film, was one of the most anticipated releases of this year by Amazon MGM Studios. Due to this, the overall reception didn’t come as a big surprise to many subscribers who were tuned into streaming the feature as soon as it dropped worldwide, leading it to accumulate 50 million viewers as the Prime Video project was watched for 1.7 billion minutes during the viewing window for the week starting from March 22, 2024, to March 28, 2024.

For further context, on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 59% of 182 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.6/10. Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 58 out of 100, based on 45 critics, indicating “mixed or average” reviews. On the other hand, Gyllenhaal also congratulated the cast and crew for the film’s success on his Instagram story. “WOW!! Congratulations to the incredible cast and crew of ROAD HOUSE!,” he wrote.

“The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film’s cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, even though the film has also received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the performance of Gyllenhaal and others criticizing the script and the extensive use of CGI for fight sequences which was pretty evident.

Salke further adds, “The world is absolutely loving this entertaining, action-packed ride anchored by the performances of Jake, Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Darren Barnet, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, JD Pardo and the rest of our stellar cast. It’s great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences. This incredible film is really giving everyone something to talk about, and we couldn’t be more proud!”

Apart from Gyllenhaal playing the lead role of Dalton, who is an ex-UFC fighter trying to escape his dark past and his penchant for violence. The film features other prominent stars like Daniela Melchior as Ellie, Joaquim De Almeida as Big Dick, Lukas Gage as Billy, whom Dalton meets as the plot proceeds with him barely scraping by on the reputation that still precedes him when he is spotted by Frankie (Jessica Williams), owner of a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

She hires him to be her new bouncer in hopes of stopping a violent gang, working for crime boss Brandt (Billy Magnussen), from destroying her beloved bar. Even five to one, Brandt’s crew is no match for Dalton’s skills. But the stakes get higher with the arrival of ruthless gun-for-hire Knox (Conor McGregor). As the brutal brawls and bloodshed escalate, the tropical Keys prove more dangerous than anything Dalton ever faced in the Octagon.
