Selena Gomez has said goodbye to her social media once again. The ‘Come and Get It’ singer, 31, took to Instagram Stories on Tuesday evening to announce that she is taking a temporary hiatus from social media. However, the star came back on the social media platform 18 hours after announcing the break.

The move comes amid swirling controversies arising from the viral incident at the Golden Globes involving Timothée Chalamet, 28, and Kylie Jenner, 26, along with her close friend Taylor Swift, 34. “I’m taking a break from social for a while,” Gomez wrote. “I’m focusing on what really matters.” The statement was accompanied by a brief clip featuring her boyfriend Benny Blanco, 35, and a pair of young kids.

What happened at the Golden Globes?

Gomez’s decision to take a break from social media follows the viral moment at the 2024 Golden Globes, where she engaged in a discussion with Taylor Swift and Miles Teller’s wife, Keleigh Sperry. According to the fans and a lip reader, Gomez had requested a photo from former ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ co-star Timothée Chalamet, who declined due to his relationship with Kylie Jenner.

Some netizens even assert that it was Kylie, a friend of Hailey Bieber, who turned down the picture on behalf of her boyfriend. Lip reader Jeremy Freeman exclusively informed Page Six that Gomez expressed, “He didn’t want a picture with me. He said no.” In response, Sperry, 31, seemingly sought clarification, asking, “Timothée?” To this, Gomez nodded her head in agreement.

Both Selena Gomez and Timothee Chamalet have denied the rumours

A source close to Gomez, 31, dismissed the viral claims, asserting that the singer “never saw” or interacted with the “Wonka” star, 28, and she “never went up to them and asked for a photo.” Chalamet, on the other hand, has also denied the rumours, telling TMZ that he is “of course” on good terms with Gomez.

The “Kill Them With Kindness” singer then officially confirmed the actual topic of discussion with her two close friends during the award show. “I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up,” she commented on E! News’ Instagram post. “Not that that’s anyone’s business.”

Gomez recently took a social media break

On October 30, Gomez took another hiatus from the platform, just over two weeks after the initiation of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, triggered by Hamas’ attack on an Israeli music festival on October 7. During this break, she expressed her reasons for not taking a strong public stance at the time.

“I’ve been taking a break from social media because my heart breaks to see all of the h*rror, hate, v*olence, and terr*r that’s going on the world,” Gomez shared. “People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific.”

“We need to protect ALL people, especially children and stop the violence for good,” she said. “I’m sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag.” Gomez noted she couldn’t just “stand by innocent people getting hurt” which makes her “sick.” She concluded the post by saying, “I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t.”
