Simu Liu, of “Shang-Chi” and “Barbie” fame, has withdrawn from the 2023 Candlelight Processional at Disney World, citing “health scares.” Liu shared the news on Thursday through an Instagram post, expressing that he won’t be appearing in the upcoming event.
The 34-year-old actor didn’t disclose specific health details, but he has recently garnered attention for tearing his Achilles tendon. The annual event features celebrity narrators retelling the Christmas story with a full orchestra and choir. Liu was reportedly set to narrate the show for three days from November 30th to December 2nd.

“I’m so absolutely gutted to have to drop out of this year’s Candlelight Processional at Disney World,” Liu expressed in his post. “For those who were looking forward to seeing me, know that I was equally looking forward to be a part of your holidays. The health of myself and my family are of paramount importance to me. After all that’s the spirit of this season! And so, after some health scares I’ve made the difficult decision to stay at home.”
He concluded the statement by hinting at a return to narrate the EPCOT Christmas event next year, saying, “Something tells me this isn’t the last you’ve seen of me at Candlelight though.. let’s all keep fingers crossed for 2024!”

‘I miss walking’
Liu recently underwent surgery after tearing his Achilles tendon in an “Olympic-style tournament of sports” in Miami, Liu underwent surgery, as reported to People. Despite the procedure leaving him in a cast and reliant on crutches, he maintained a positive outlook during the tropical trip.
“Achilles tears aren’t so bad when you’ve got twenty of your best friends to carry you around,” he shared on Instagram in October, along with photos of him with friends on a boat. “Thanks for the ultimate friends sports weekend; I miss walking, but I miss you all more!”
