Will there be another season of Sherwood?

Yes, it is official! Sherwood is returning for a second season. The network official renewed the series in June 2022, with the official Twitter handle of the BBC Press Office confirming the renewal, quoting, “@mrJamesGraham’s smash-hit drama Sherwood is officially returning for a second series!” Take a look at the official post below:

Why did BBC pick up Sherwood for Season 2?

According to Deadline, “The BBC has greenlit a second season of Sherwood from Brexit: The Uncivil War and Quiz creator James Graham, immediately after the conclusion of the first. The first run of the whodunnit thriller ended on BBC One in the past few minutes and the network has committed, after millions of viewers tuned in each week to the show from Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross’ BBC Studios-backed drama indie House Productions.”

Moreover, James Graha, the creator of the show,  said he has been “deeply moved” by the reaction to season one, stating, “These stories come from my home and I want to specifically express gratitude to my community for whom I know these subjects can be difficult, but – I hope – important ones to explore,” he added. “The East Midlands and former ‘Red Wall’ areas like it are never just one thing, politically or culturally, and it’s been the honour of my life to give voice and character to a place I love.”

Sherwood Season 2 Potential Release Date

The exact release date of Sherwood Season 2 is yet to be confirmed by BBC as of July 1, 2022, because the series was renewed just a few days ago. But on the bright side, as per BBC, the production is expected to begin in 2023. If we were to guess, we’d say the release date would be between early to mid-2024.

Based on the previous season’s release date pattern, the series’ rollout, most likely, begins sometime around June 2024. Furthermore, we would want to emphasize that this is all guesswork at this time. As a result, BBC will publish and confirm the official release dates in the following months, which fans should keep an eye on.

Sherwood Season 2 Expected Plot

According to an official BBC press release, James Graham, the writer, will pen a second series that draws inspiration from the county’s industrial past. Graham will focus on “red wall” towns in season 2, a term for a strong Labour constituency in the Midlands, the North, and Wales. These communities will experience the effects of having so-called “spy cops” stationed in their towns, bringing up unpleasant memories from the past.

The exact plotlines for each episode of Sherwood Season 2 are under wraps for the time being. As a result, the pilot episode of Sherwood Season 2 is intended to follow this already established idea from James Graham’s statement which shows that the series will delve right into and follow the county’s industrial past.

Further adding, “It’s also a joy to see our incredible cast be so celebrated, along with lead director Lewis Arnold, who I owe a great debt, and Ben Williams. None of this would have been possible without House Productions championing and supporting me every step of the way, and without the public service remit of the BBC.”

Moreover, BBC Drama’s acting director Ben Irving added: “We are thrilled that James Graham and the team at House have agreed to return to the world of Sherwood a second time. This series has been met with an incredible reaction from audiences on the BBC thanks to the amazing work of all involved.”

Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross, Executive Producers for House, add: “No single place is defined by just one story, and it was always our intention, and hope, that James would get to return to the wider community of Nottinghamshire to build on the world created in Sherwood and explore more characters and their stories, delving into the issues and relationships that have long shaped them.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled by the response to series one and are so grateful to the incredible team that has brought this show to life, including the brilliant Lewis Arnold and the phenomenal cast who have inhabited these beautifully complex characters which have so resonated with viewers. We can’t wait to return to Sherwood, with James, to start work on series two.”

Mark Linsey, MD of Scripted at BBC Studios, says: “James Graham and House as a team have a standout record of creating brilliant television, and it has been wonderful to watch the reception from audiences here in the UK to Sherwood. Ahead of series one launching globally across markets, including the US, Singapore and Australia, it is exciting to confirm that audiences can eagerly look forward to a second exploration of Nottingham once they have also been able to watch the all-star cast of series one deliver a powerful and gripping performance.”

Many of the episodes have been favorably received by viewers and critics, luring people to watch the series when it airs on television or via streaming service. So, it will be interesting to see how they deal with this added pressure and introduce something new and intense to the series.
