It seems that not all is well with Sofia Vergara, as she ended up missing the television’s biggest night and spent it in a hospital instead.
The 53-year-old actress took to Instagram to share why she missed the 77th annual awards show on Sunday, September 14. Vergara revealed that she suffered from the “craziest eye allergy” before she stepped out of her house. Apparently, the Colombian-American actress had already styled her hair in soft waves, indicating that she was almost done with her preparations when she experienced the allergic reaction.
Posting a carousel of photos on the social media platform, the Modern Family alum wrote:
“Didn’t make it to the Emmys but made it to the ER 🤣😩Sorry, I had to cancel! Craziest eye [allergy] right before getting in the car! 🤣🤣.”

In one of the posts, the actress could be seen lying in a hospital bed, and in another one, she was rinsing her eye with water in a hospital sink.
Referencing the September 9 press release, PEOPLE stated that Vergara was slated to present at this year’s ceremony alongside a litany of A-listers that included Elizabeth Banks, Angela Bassett, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Sterling K. Brown, Jennifer Coolidge, Colman Domingo, Tina Fey, Mariska Hargitay, Jude Law, Sarah Paulson, Sydney Sweeney, Jesse Williams, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The actress was supposed to present the award for the lead actor in a Limited/Anthology series or movie.
Vergara and Emmys forged a powerful bond ever since the actress started styling bold statement looks at the venue. According to She Knows, Vergara donned a bold, Rabbit-inspired red gown designed by Dolce & Gabbana at the 2024 Emmys. The dress infallibly hugged her curves, exuding Goddess vibes, especially accompanied by the retro glamor waves.
Speaking to Net-a-Porter in 2016, she talked about her fashion peculiarities, saying, “People will often say that I wear the same thing on the red carpet, but I know my body: it’s very voluptuous and I’ve got the boobs of a stripper. I need my dresses to have structure – and under armor.”
This time, her sartorial touch was inevitably missed by her fans.
However, Vergara’s FOMO will presumably be a bit assuaged if she knew she wasn’t the only one who was not able to make it to the event. As per the news outlet, Eric Dane, who was also supposed to present, did not appear, following his recent amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis, which was revealed in June.
The 77th Emmys were hosted by Grammy-nominated Nate Bargatze.
Joining the list of the winners this evening were HBO Max’s The Pitt and Apple TV+’s The Studio, which were awarded the Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, respectively. Additionally, Adolescence bagged an Emmy in the Limited/Anthology category, along with main category and acting accolades.
Per the public opinion, Stephen Colbert’s acceptance speech was touted to be one of the best, after his cancelled The Late Show, which will air its final episode in May 2026, received the Outstanding Talk Series award.
Additionally, Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old actor who rose to stardom for his role in Adolescence, became the youngest male winner ever in the Supporting Actor category for a Limited or Anthology series. It seems the Emmy is on its way to break glass ceilings since it also observed Tramell Tillman making history as the first Black man to win the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama series for his role in Severance.
