Welcome to 2023, le monde! The new year does not only mark new beginnings but also the release of some of the new seasons of the old shows that continue to spark excitement ever since their debuts, like You, Outer Banks, Shadow and Bone and more. Unfortunately, if you have been waiting for the arrival of the fifth season of Stranger Things, then we hate to break the sad news to you. Stranger Things season 5 is not coming to Netflix in January 2023, and it seems that it won’t be hitting the library of the official streaming giant in 2023 at all.
Here are all the latest updates you need to know about the new season of the show.
When will Stranger Things season 5 arrive on Netflix?
As previously mentioned, Stranger Things season 5 won’t be hitting the Netflix library in 2023 at all. Netflix Life reasons out the delay in the release date of the fifth and unfortunately, the final season by saying that “a show this big takes a long time to produce, plus the stars are all booked and busy with other projects.”
Unlike season 4, the fifth season of Stranger Things won’t face any interruptions caused by COVID-19. As a result, the final season will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2024. A summer release, presumably, in May and July of 2024 is what we are looking forward to considering the previous releases of the seasons.
In a conversation with GQ, Stranger Things star David Harbour speculated that season 5 will mostly come out in mid-2024, which seems like a concrete prediction at this time.
Has the production of Stranger Things season 5 begun?
According to a tweet from the Stranger Things writers’ account, the fifth season began its writing process on August 2, 2022. Not only that, but on November 7, 2022, which was touted as Stranger Things Day 2022, the season 5 episode 1 chapter name was revealed: “Chapter One: The Crawl.” Therefore, it seems that the final season of the show is still in the writing process.
What’s on Netflix reports that the fifth season will also have “a slightly reduced episode count compared to season 4, reduced from 9 to 8.”
As per the Production Weekly Issue 1326 released on December 1st, the filming process of Stranger Things season 5 will start in mid-May 2023. Based on the production listing, we know that the filming will continue in Atlanta, Georgia as per the previous seasons. Additionally, Production Weekly also mentions that the production will take place at EUE/Screen Gems Studio Atlanta Studio, the studio which in use since Stranger Things season 1.

What can we expect to happen in Stranger Things season 5?
*Spoiler alert*
At the time of writing, we are quite uncertain about the tangent that season 5 will supposedly take, however, the Duffer Brothers have teased some plot points that we can expect in the upcoming season. In a conversation with SFX, Matt Duffer talked about the conclusion of the whole series. He said:
“We know what the ending is…It’s conceivable that it changes but I think it’s unlikely because it’s one of those endings that just feels, and has always felt, right. It also feels sort of inevitable. Then when you come up with it, you’re like, ‘Oh yeah well, that is absolutely what it has to be.'”
In season 4 we see that every group, in Nevada, Indiana, and Russia, has unconsciously teamed up to defeat Vecna. It concludes with Robin, Steve, and Nancy conflagrating the defenseless physical form in the Upside Down. At the same time, Mike and Will try to dunk Eleven in a makeshift sensory deprivation tank, Will, towards the end of episode 9, realizes that Vecna is not defeated yet.
In conversation with Collider, the showrunners unraveled the “primary focus” of season 5: Will, as the final episodes “circle back to season one.” Matt said, “We’re starting to see his coming of age, really, which has been challenging for a number of reasons; some of which are supernatural. But you’re starting to see him come into his own.”
