With many fictional shows of all genres making rounds on various platforms, NBC, ABC, and CBS Network have come up with a lineup of reality TV and game shows for their fall lineup. One such CBS show that finished premiering on September 20, 2023, is Superfan.
A show with a platonic and an already tried and tested plot line follows a musical spectacle or event that is actually a game show that the participants are not aware of. While contestants prove via many elimination rounds that they are the true and ultimate music fans, every episode has a new musical artist as a judge who selects a superfan and gives them a lifetime prize, a collaboration. Prize money? Or both.
With 5.9/10 IMDb rating and 74% Google critic score, this game show is a Yacht Money and Raquel Productions product, officially produced by Jodi Roth, Keltie Knight, and Jack Martin. With Katie Knight and Nate Burleson as hosts, there are speculations about having a second season. Let us see if Superfan Season 2 is canceled.
Superfan Season 2: Is it renewed or canceled?
While there has been no official update on the renewal status of a second season, there are various reasons the show will not return for a second season, which are:
- Expensive Production due to musical artists
- Not much viewership, which has been problematic for CBS
- An already tried concept for a gaming show with more promising versions like The Voice
- Writer’s Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes are hindering many good shows earlier canceled by CBS, and it is high time CBS renews them instead of this show that has not performed at par
- The recency of completion of the first season- with episode 6, the finale being out on September 20, 2023, we need to wait and see if the numbers pick up in the near future(The last episode is titled “Kelsea Ballerini)
The reason why the show can return is to showcase and provide publicity for CBS assets and market the properties they own. As the show is a core in-house production, CBS gets marketing and revenue via sponsorship, which is necessary to keep the company afloat during times of strikes.
In the official synopsis of the show by CBS, one can find, “Sure, you say you know all about your favorite music star, but are you a Superfan? CBS introduces the ultimate fan-based competition, in which contestants vie to prove who knows the most about a favorite performer. These aspiring superfans will also live a dream by getting to personally engage one-on-one with their idol. A game show meets music spectacle with the winners claiming social-media bragging rights as well as a huge music-based prize packaged by their favorite artist.”
