Will the tale of Sergeant II Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. continue to live? Here’s what we know so far about S.W.A.T. Season 7.
It’s raining renewals on the CBS network! The 2023-24 television broadcast renewals for many series were just announced, which includes some of the beloved franchises like NCIS, along with NCIS: Hawai’i, Survivor, and CSI: Vegas, among others, which got greenlit early even though some of their current seasons still have many episodes left to premiere and which will eventually conclude the season’s storyline in the coming weeks.
While scrolling through the list, many fans were disappointed to learn that the police procedural television series “S.W.A.T.” was not included in the renewal list along with Blue Bloods and East New York. It’s a shock for many viewers as these three current CBS scripted series are the only ones that have yet to receive word on next season. To say the least, this is not the news that many viewers wanted to wake up to, as these shows have been unique in their own ways and built a loyal fandom that deserves to see another season.
It’s unexpected because S.W.A.T. has consistently topped the ratings year after year since its move to Fridays this season, where the drama has thrived, averaging a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.08 million viewers in the live plus same-day ratings from viewers each week with a brand new episode, which is great for any network to renew the show for more seasons.
The delay might have happened because there is still time for the sixth season to reach the near end. On the other hand, Deadline reported that S.W.A.T. is in active renewal negotiations, with proposed budget cuts among the points that need to be hammered out. Amid the overall decline of linear ratings, it has become common practice for broadcast networks to ask for budget reductions on long-running series, which naturally become more expensive as they age.
It is not the only thing that is in negotiation as it has the report has been circulating around that a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and CBS Studios, S.W.A.T., like Blue Bloods, had previously received early renewals. The report stated that talks for a seventh season have recently started and there are no major hurdles, with sources optimistic that a compromise on the budget and other points would be reached.
For the time being, fans can only hope that the network will not end the series abruptly, as it is one of the best long-running series that serves as a moneymaker for the company, which has been able to capture the audience and spread its magic with each new season. While you wait for a renewal confirmation update, we recommend that you watch the sixth season, which will premiere a new episode in a few days on CBS before taking a midseason break and resuming its run next month.
