Sweet Magnolias Season 4: Is the renewal likely?

Are the renewal talks still taking place behind closed doors? If you’re curious to know more, then continue reading to find out more about Sweet Magnolias Season 4.

It has been weeks since we last saw the third season, which premiered last month on July 20, 2023, and was met with critical acclaim around the world. To everyone’s delight, the third season holds a 67% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 6 reviews, with an average rating of 6.3/10, and it has been trending on the global charting list for a while across various regions, not just Netflix US, which excited the fans to know whether the series will be renewed for additional seasons or not. It is quite a valid query to raise when we consider the fact that the show has the potential to be expanded further by meeting the demands of the viewers.

Right now, to clear this doubt among the loyal fans, we can assure them that right now that it doesn’t seem like the creators might be encouraging the idea of scrapping this beloved show anytime soon as the reception speaks for itself, making it one of the most streamed on Netflix’s romantic drama genre which will be soon be renewed for a fourth season. One of the biggest reasons for the show’s high chance of being renewed in the coming weeks is that the seasons are based on the Sweet Magnolias novels by Sherryl Woods which includes the following 11 books still left to be adapted for the television screens:

  • Stealing Home (2007)
  • A Slice of Heaven (2007)
  • Feels Like Family (2007)
  • Welcome to Serenity (2008)
  • Home in Carolina (2010)
  • Sweet Tea at Sunrise (2010)
  • Honeysuckle Summer (2010)
  • Midnight Promises (2012)
  • Catching Fireflies (2012)
  • Where Azaleas Bloom (2012)
  • Swan Point (July 29, 2014)

Sweet Magnolias Season 4: Is the renewal likely?

Since this is a great sign for the creators and cast, which points towards a possible fourth season being adapted from the above books for another spectacular season, which will hopefully make it an easy decision for the show’s creators to get an early renewal in the coming weeks because right now the network might still be evaluating the overall viewership and reception to justify another season as it can help to paint a picture of its future plans, which so far seem to be heading in a positive direction. Hence, if the show is able to perform remarkably well by being on the top 10 global streaming charts for more weeks, then it stands a chance of being renewed within a month or two after the premiere.

On the other hand, if you have been keeping up with the current state of major Hollywood production houses, there is no hiding the fact that they have been on a temporary halt due to the dual strikes, which include the 2023 WGA strike along with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which sadly still haven’t reached any agreement, then you’ll understand why it is a bit concerning and leads to confusion among the fans as to why the delay in renewal might be happening. So, if you’re thinking the same thing, then don’t worry! To curb your doubts, we’ve mentioned below several possible reasons why the show’s potential renewal might be getting pushed back:

Sweet Magnolias Season 4: Is the renewal likely?

Reason 1: The 2023 WGA strike is an ongoing labor dispute between the Writers Guild of America, which represents 11,500 screenwriters, and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. It has been one of the major reasons why many networks, including Netflix, have started to put a hold on the approval or production of the series for a while, especially until a resolution has been reached for the writer’s compensation. Due to this, we speculate that the renewal for the fourth season might not have been approved as of writing this article.

Reason 2: The cast and crew might be considering taking a break in order to get the future seasons of the show sorted with respect to viewership, cost cutting, production cost, budget allocation, casting decisions, and overall reception, among other crucial factors that help determine the fate of the series. This is a great sign indicating that a lot of decision-making takes place behind the scenes before another season is greenlit, which makes it understandable why the renewal approval might have taken such a long time to get an official announcement.

Reason 3: As stated above, another strike is the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which effectively started on July 14, 2023, with the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA striking over an ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. It has coincided with a Writers Guild of America strike in a series of broader Hollywood labor disputes, making it one of the reasons why the show creators and crew might be considered to delay the renewal announcement of the series for the time being, which might get acknowledged later.

In conclusion, these reasons might play a part in determining the renewal of the show, which might take more time to get an official stamp. So, if you want to receive information on potential renewal updates, then we urge you to enable notifications on the show’s social media. Until then, fans of this romantic drama series can continue to enjoy the new episodes and speculate about what more plotlines and character arcs might be explored in a potential fourth season if it gets renewed in the near future, which isn’t something to be worried about because it will probably get approved soon, if not later.

We’ll just have to patiently wait and keep our fingers crossed and hopes high!

Sweet Magnolias Season 4 Potential Release Date: When will it premiere on Netflix?

As of writing this, we can confirm that the series has not been officially greenlit by the network, as it has only been a few days since the third season of Sweet Magnolias was made available to binge-watch. But if we observe, the gap between this show’s previous seasons has roughly been about a year or so, which is typical for a show of this caliber to wrap up its methodical production on schedule and not last more than a few months. Hence, as per our guess, if the series is renewed within the next few months, then we can assume that the new episodes might come back around mid-2024, just like the past two seasons, which premiered in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Moreover, we should consider that there is an ongoing 2023 WGA strike along with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which has put a halt to major work among various production houses in Hollywood until a proper resolution relating to their compensation is made. This situation has the potential to cause a delay in the commencement of production if it gets renewed, which will eventually cause uncertainties in its release if the situation doesn’t get resolved anytime soon. So, everything relating to the official release date is just pure speculation, and we’ll have to wait sometime until the network confirms these details in the near future!

Sweet Magnolias Season 4 Plot: What to expect?

If the series is renewed, then the plot might continue to expand from the third season, which is as follows:

“Following the brawl at Sullivan’s, Maddie wrestles with the best way to help Cal and works to clear her own emotional path. Helen faces difficult decisions about the men in her life. And Dana Sue searches for a way to use Miss Frances’ check to help the community without upending her family. The identity of the tire slasher sends shockwaves through Serenity, the recall causes unexpected consequences, and there are romantic surprises in every generation. Throughout the season, the ladies tackle these problems — and all the complications they cause — with their trademark warmth, humor, and devotion to each other and those they love. And margaritas.”

*Spoiler Alert*

Even though Netflix hasn’t revealed any information regarding whether season 4 will be renewed!

JoAnna Garcia Swisher has recently discussed potential new episodes with Good Housekeeping before the SAG-AFTRA strike. She added to the publication that following their breakup in season 3, she thought there was a lot more to discover about the Sweet Magnolias. “I think [the rift] adds a lot of depth to their friendship,” she said. “The show literally celebrates this friendship between these three women. That is what this show is at the heart of it, and all that happens in between it … They’ve gone to hell and back with each other, and that type of relationship is very real and very relatable. I think that there’s still so much storytelling in that way.”

On the other hand, Brooke Elliott also spoke with TVFanatic about whether a fourth season of Sweet Magnolias was on the way. She was optimistic about the outcome of her character’s future. “I would like to see more of Ronnie and Dana Sue together,” she said. Further adding, “I really love them. And I love the growth that they go through.” She also added: “I love to see those little pieces of nuance and intricacies that come out about her personality that round her out. You get to know who Dana Sue is, where she came from, how she became the way she is, and all the pieces of how she is.”

Sweet Magnolias Season 4 Episode Count: How many will be there, and where to stream?

Once the renewal is confirmed, we speculate that the upcoming season will have around the same 10 episodes with an average runtime of 43–54 minutes, just like the prior seasons to be consistent, which will drop at once, so you can binge it instantly! We would also like to emphasize that the episode count is currently subject to change as it can be reduced due to the ongoing 2023 Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike along with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA, which can cause a delay in the pre-production stage of many shows due to a temporary standstill in the production of the shows due to lack of actors and writers.

When Sweet Magnolias Season 4 is renewed and draws close to its release date, the series will be available exclusively on Netflix, with all the prior seasons and other series of the same genre also accessible on the streaming platform with a range of membership options depending on the various packages you choose. The basic membership starts at $9.99/month, and the standard membership starts at $15.49/month at no additional cost with any of their services. The video quality and the number of screens you can use to stream Netflix simultaneously depend on the package you choose.
