Based upon the book Half Bad by Sally Green, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself is a Netflix adaptation by Joe Barton, who is popular for works like iBoy and Giri/Haji. Barton, according to What’s on Netflix, is currently working on Our Man from Jersey.
The official synopsis of The Bastard Son & Devil Himself (courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes) reads:
“Caught between two warring clans, the son of a notorious witch responsible for a deadly massacre tries to find his place in the world and his powers.”
Upon its release, the show has been successful in gaining good reviews from critics and audiences alike. Rotten Tomatoes scores the show at 92% on the critical front and a 91% on the audience. Not only that, but IMDb also rates the show at 7.6/10.
Is Half Bad: The Bastard Son &The Devil Himself renewed for a season 2?
At the time of writing, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself has not been renewed for a second season as of yet. According to What’s on Netflix:
“Given the show’s early performance, we would’ve been predicting a likely cancellation, but given that the title comes out of Netflix UK, the barrier to renewal could be lower. Either way, completing the show is the best way to ensure renewal.”
In a conversation with RadioTimes, actor Jay Lycurgo said:
“My point with season 2 is that we’re in a really great place in a world where we’ve only looked at a small chunk of it. There’s so much more to explore.”
The renewal of the second season will also take into account the preceding changes related to the title. When the show was launched, it was titled The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. However, now it has changed into Half Bad. Certainly, this name-changing is a rare case for Netflix, however, there’s more to what the eye can see.
One of the reasons why Netflix agreed to the title change is it wanted the title to coincide with the title of the book, in order to induce name recognition. Or the original title remained relatively more search than the Bastard Son & Devil Himself.
What can we expect to happen in Half Bad: The Bastard Son &The Devil Himself Season 2 on Netflix?
In season one finale, we see that:
“Soul goes on a rampage at Wolfhagen, eager to finally hunt down Marcus. Nathan, Annalise and Gabriel race to stop him before it’s too late.”
Even though the show has traversed in a different trajectory than the books (that leads to the show being called a spiritual adaptation by Joe Barton), it will still have a lot of source material to cover provided it’s renewed for a second season.
Assuming that the second season will be based upon the second book, Half Wild, the official synopsis of the second book reads:
“Nathan is hunted from all sides: nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. Now, Nathan has come into his own unique magical Gift, and he’s on the run–but the Hunters are close behind, and they will stop at nothing until they have captured Nathan and destroyed his father.”
