In 2020, it was actively rumored that a reboot of the much-loved film The Crow, based on a superhero comic book series of the same name, created by James O’Barr, was in the works.
The origin story is based on a comic strip. Although the protagonist is a supernatural hero, his origin is quite different from other superheroes in other comic books.
Bill Skarsgard joins the Crow Reboot as Eric Draven
Until now, new reports indicate that the long-awaited reboot has finally gained traction with the casting of the titular character. Bill Skarsgard, who starred as Pennywise the Clown in the It franchise, has been cast as Eric Draven in a new version of The Crow.
Rupert Sanders will direct the movie. Zach Baylin, nominated for an Academy Award, wrote the script for this new iteration of the revenge thriller.
Who else will be joining the reboot cast? The Crow reboot is getting ready to take off. Just days after it was revealed that Bill Skarsgard would play the titular character in the film, FKA twigs have been cast as his co-star. While we don’t yet know the character’s name, we know she could have been asked to play Eric Draven’s girlfriend/fiancee, Shelby Webster.
The Crow Reboot Release Date
Only the casting has been announced so far, and the film has yet to begin production. The movie is reportedly eyeing June to start production of the movie.
Making such an ambitious project takes time, especially when previous attempts to create a reboot have met with numerous setbacks. The release dates and additional information will be shared with fans once the film is on track to begin filming.
The History of The Crow Franchise
Due to its enormous popularity, the comic was acquired to be made into a live adaptation film titled the same. The film was released in 1994 and has become a cult classic. Alex Proyas directed the film, which David J. Schow and John Shirley wrote.
Eric Draven, played by Brandon Lee, is the film’s main protagonist. A murdered musician is resurrected to avenge his and his fiancée’s deaths.
Take a look at the trailer for The Crow (1994):
The film is also remembered for its connection to Brandon Lee’s tragic death. At the same time, he was filming a scene when a misfiring prop shot him while he was dressed and in character as Draven. Due to this incident, the movie is dedicated to Brandon Lee and his fiancée, Eliza Hutton.
Leaving aside the fame, The Crow is a shockingly compelling film that plays with fictitious ideas while depicting a hell-bent world and the cruelty which Draven faced. Almost every male star in Hollywood has been linked to a reboot, but it’s difficult to argue that anyone could have done it better than Brandon Lee.
The film grossed $94 million on a $23 million budget when finished and released. The film’s success prompted a media franchise, including three sequels and a television drama. The sequels, which mainly featured different characters and none of the original cast, failed to match the first film’s success.
Despite numerous attempts and remakes, the franchise could not recreate the magic that Brandon had established. Fans will never forget him and draw parallels between him and new castings. It sounds a lot like Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight.
Previously, some test footage of Jason Momoa as Eric Draven was circulated online when he was supposed to take on the role of titular vigilante before departing from the film. The studio hasn’t confirmed or revealed any casting updates since then.

Here’s the rest of the footage. There’s always been some confusion around if it’s from before he was cast or not. I’ve personally never been able to confirm but perhaps @corinhardy can?! #TheCrow #JasonMomoa https://t.co/3QOXCRZnaU pic.twitter.com/saY1WXaf4U

We can’t ignore the fans who have been adamant that the franchise not be rebooted. However, the story is so compelling that the studios will push for the film to be made and proceed with the project, especially when superhero movies are so successful and well-received around the world.
On the other hand, die-hard fans should be excited to see this iteration because the team appears to have offered something unique for a film that has been delayed so many times.
We hope the wait was worthwhile and that the film does justice to the character and the previous 1994 version. Only time will tell what the franchise’s future holds, but things appear to be going well for the time being.
